Trim the Fat, Keep Your Hard-Earned
Muscle In Time For Summer

Well, the fun part is over. If you followed the guidelines provided in our winter Bulking Up feature, you're looking at a different guy in the mirror today. You’ve been lifting and eating and eating and lifting all winter and into the spring, growing bigger and bulkier day after day. Are you big? Yes you are! Do you want to take your shirt off? No, not really.

Now comes the tricky part. The moment where you turn all of those squats and calories into a ripped, shredded and rock hard work of art. You’re at the moment of truth . . . and there are so many ways to go wrong.

Are you about to enter into a lockdown period of strict caloric deficit? That’s a good way to lose weight, if by “weight” you mean “muscle mass.” Starving the beast will cause your body to radically downshift metabolism to compensate, diminishing fat mobilization and sacrificing metabolically expensive muscle tissue for fuel. Lean muscle mass is an active tissue that requires energy to maintain, so it’s always the first to go when the body encounters famine.

And then, too, you’re going to experience a massive energy crash that will undermine your workouts and trap-door you into a general lethargy and listlessness. Not exactly the look you were hoping to rock on the beach this summer. Cutting way back on caloric intake also generates cortisol-producing mental stress, which is closely linked to fat gain, not fat loss. And let’s face it, even if there were any positive outcomes to be had by living on starvation rations, you wouldn’t be able to sustain that lifestyle for very long anyway. That’s a common yo-yo dynamic that has kept Weight Watchers in business for more than fifty years.

So, what to do? (NO, not more cardio! The answer is NEVER more muscle-wasting cardio!) The key is to eat just about as much protein as before. Why? Because research tells us that increased protein intake can promote weight loss with a greater percentage of the lost weight coming from body fat. The consumption of protein has a thermogenic effect because it takes more energy (and burns more calories) to digest protein as compared to fats and carbs. Add this to the fact that dietary protein supports muscle repair, recovery, and growth, and it is readily apparent that cutting back on protein intake is not the solution. Certain proteins are more beneficial to your cutting phase than others, however, and we’ll be getting to that subject in a bit.

How about carbs? Here’s a place where you will have to cut back a bit, but you must remain cognizant that carbs (and healthy fats too) are a crucial energy source that will support both your workouts and the many bodily processes that make fat mobilization and muscle mass maintenance possible. So you’ll have to compensate for that energy deficit somewhere else. An energy catalyst that also targets excess fat would fit the bill nicely. This is where supplemental sports nutrition science can really help you out. But before we get to that (and some related strategies for addressing body composition and excess water weight), let’s start with protein.

Leverage the Transformational Power of a
True Fat-Loss, Muscle-Supporting Protein

During your bulking phase, you were undoubtedly augmenting your daily 6-meal plan with a super-premium protein supplement like ProSource’s NytroWhey® Ultra Elite. NytroWhey Ultra Elite’s matrix of highest-quality whey protein isolate and cutting-edge ultra-hydrolyzed whey, combined with an anabolism-triggering leucine peptide technology, is ideal for fueling significant lean mass gains in response to training. You should continue to make a powerful protein like NytroWhey the cornerstone of your supplementation regimen.

For the purpose of cutting excess fat, however, you need to expand your protein horizons to include a unique transformational protein like ProSource’s Vectron®. Vectron is no ordinary protein supplement, as it contains a unique fractionated protein complex called Prolibra® which, along with an advanced whey mineral complex, is specifically designed to enhance body composition.

The scientific case for Vectron’s key active ingredient Prolibra is compelling. In an independent, randomized, double-blind, 12-week clinical trial published in the Journal of Nutrition and Metabolism, test subjects showed significant improvements in the ratio of lean mass to fat while taking just 24.4 grams of Prolibra® per day compared to a control group taking an isocaloric placebo. The subjects taking Prolibra® retained twice as much lean muscle with 79% fat-loss compared to the control group at 51% fat loss. Prolibra® is highly exceptional in this regard, as no other protein complex has been clinically proven to achieve this type of body composition improvement in a 12-week period (not to mention at such a modest daily dose). Remarkably, the Prolibra® group, using just 24.4 grams per day, lost 6.1% fat.

Results of this study also suggested that Prolibra consumption may help reduce the glycemic response after a meal, which can further enhance fat loss over time. Specifically, the study indicated that consumption of Prolibra resulted in a reduction of 37.8 glycemic index (GI) units which can help control appetite, maintain energy levels and improve insulin sensitivity, not to mention keep you in fat burning mode longer. Switching out one of your daily protein doses for a serving of Vectron will pay big dividends for your cutting phase.

Ramp Up The Attack on Excess Fat With a
Thermodynamic Weight-Loss Super Supplement

Losing fat while maintaining muscle is the hardest physiological task you’ll ever take on. Indeed, for many years, most experts thought it was impossible. That’s why you need to attack excess fat via as many pathways as possible. If you can do that while also sustaining your energy levels, you’ll be well on your way to achieving your goal.

Now that you’ve the protein portion of your regimen squared away, it’s time to turn to a  premium-quality fat burner to help get rid of those last few pounds of stubborn fat. The leader in the weight-loss category for quite some time now, BetaStax® Elite from BioQuest contains a powerful matrix of fat-loss co-factors clinically dosed in the ideal ratio to achieve physique transformation. It also contains a number of powerful energy catalysts that will amp up your workout and help you maintain maximum clarity, focus, and intensity in the face of a caloric deficit.

BetaStax Elite’s key active ingredient, PureWay-Slim®, is an innovative and unique bioactive matrix of fat loss agents that has been validated in independent clinical testing. In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, it was reported that taking 250 mg of PureWay-Slim® (the same dose found in BetaStax Elite) resulted in significantly greater reductions in body weight and waist and hip circumferences when compared to placebo treatment in as little as a few weeks. Subjects not only lost fat, but also had significant elevations in plasma Cholecystokinin (CCK) after meals. This neuropeptide mediates the feeling of “fullness” after a meal by binding to receptors in the brain.

BetaStax Elite also contains another mechanism that supplies a standardized dose of chlorogenic acid, a compound that appears to modulate fat metabolism. Indeed research suggests that chlorogenic acid may inhibit glucose-6-phosphate translocase, which facilitates the absorption and utilization of consumed carbohydrates. More research is necessary, but early results have been promising. BetaStax® Elite also contains Razberi-K, a form of raspberry ketones that may also support the mobilization and utilization of fat.

And that’s just half the story. BetaStax Elite’s matrix of precision-targeted energy-support factors will ensure that you’re deriving maximum benefit from high-intensity workouts, while also helping you feel vital and energized throughout the day.

Add a Non-Stimulant Agent of Body
Composition Enhancement to Your Regimen

There’s more than one way to target excess fat, and that brings us conjugated linoleic acid (CLA). Athletes have long favored CLA for its demonstrated positive effects on muscle-to-fat body composition and its non-stimulant mechanism of action, which makes it ideal for late-in-the-day supplementation. Like the other supplements in your cutting-phase stack, CLA is well-validated in clinical testing.

In one recent study, seventy-six subjects participated in resistance training five days per week for seven weeks while supplementing with either CLA or a placebo. After the seven weeks, the CLA group reported greater increases in lean tissue and greater losses of fat mass when compared to the placebo group (Pinkoski, Chilibeck et al. 2006). Another study had 69 men and women supplement with varying combinations of whey protein, creatine, and CLA. When all three were consumed together, significantly greater increases in upper and lower-body strength and muscle tissue mass were found when compared to the other groups (Cornish, Candow et al. 2009). For CLA, the Tonalin® brand has always been the gold standard. Fortunately, that’s what you’ll find in ProSource brand CLA, which is 100% sourced from Tonalin® CLA.

Dry Up Excess Water Weight With an
Advanced Herbal Definition Formula

After a few weeks adhering to the supplementation regimen above, while also managing a relatively small carb deficit and a high-impact training schedule, you’ll soon be approaching the finish line of your cutting phase. But you’re not done yet. Subcutaneous water retention can still give you a bloated, rounded look. This is where Razor Ripped by BioQuest can save the day. Razor Ripped is the most innovative and gentle way to reduce excess water retention, enabling you reveal your polished and rock-hard physique in 72 hours or less. Razor Ripped utilizees a unique combination of botanical diuretics, caffeine, and green tea, which will zap excess water and tighten your skin, while also elevating metabolism and enhancing vascularity.

Remember that a successful cutting phase, like your bulking phase, requires persistence and patience. Approach leaning out strategically and intelligently via targeted supplementation (and hard work in the gym) and your transformed physique will emerge in all its ripped and shredded glory.
