Recently Reported: IFBB Pro League athletes and athletes from other sports leagues had career updates or made recent guest appearances at various sports, bodybuilding, physique and fitness events. The latest "Andrew Oye's Pro-Muscle Report" Pro Athletes Roundup includes some legendary competitors in the International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness; winners of the Arnold Sports Festival's international editions of the IFBB Pro Arnold Schwarzenegger Classic Bodybuilding Championships; and a heavy heap of international competitors in the World's Strongest Man Championships. The "So What?":
Over the weekend, IFBB Pro Victor Martinez (2011 Arnold Classic Europe Champion and 2007 Arnold Classic USA Champion) was the headlining guest poser at the IFBB/NPC Miami Muscle Beach Pro/Am Championships in Florida. IFBB Pro Steve Kuclo (2014 Arnold Classic Brasil Champion) was the featured guest poser at the NPC Bayou Muscle Championships in Metairie, Louisiana. IFBB Pro Fred Smalls was the guest performer at the NPC Gopher State Classic in Minneapolis, Minnesota. IFBB Pro Guy Cisternino guest-posed at NPC Vermont Championships in South Burlington, Vermont. Unfortunately, athletes and fans missed an opportunity for more professional physique sports in Canada. The inaugural Edmonton Pro Championships, which had been scheduled for this past weekend, was cancelled. As a result, the Toronto Pro Championships (June 6) and the Vancouver Pro Championships (July 25) will be Canada's only IFBB Pro Olympia Qualification Series contests this year.
In the world of strength sports, WSM strongman competitors faced-off in the World's Strongest Qualifying Rounds in Malaysia. Chasing the five-title record of Mariusz Pudzianowski (now an MMA fighter), 4-time WSM winner Zydrunas Savickas battled with Mateusz Baron, Adam Bishop, Jean-François Caron, Martin Forsmark, Robert Oberst, Brian Shaw, Hafthor Bjornsson, Graham Hicks, Rafal Kobylarz, Akos Nagy, Dimitar Savatinov, Josh Thigpen, Nick Best, Benedikt Magnusson, David Nystrom, Laurence Shahlaei, Mikhail Shivlyakov, Johannes Arsjo, Mark Felix, Jerry Pritchett, Krzysztof Radzikowski, Gerhard Van Staden, Dainis Zageris, Matjaz Belsak, Mike Burke, Mike Caruso, Eddie Hall, Ole Martin Hansen, and Grzegorz Szymanski. The 2015 World's Strongest Man will be crowed after the Final Rounds this weekend (April 25-26).Andrew Oye's Verdict:
Bodybuilding fans in the United Kingdom were treated to the Legends Live UK, an exclusive two-day event with seminars that featured 1983 Mr. Olympia IFBB Pro Samir Bannout (60), "The Golden Eagle" IFBB Pro Tom Platz (60), and IFBB Pro Ed Corney (81) in Birmingham and Southampton, England. These "Golden Era" legends participated in meet-and-greets, photo-ops, autograph signings, and Q&A sessions, where they offered tips on exercise, nutrition and posing and recounted stories from training with and/or competing against 7-time Mr. Olympia Arnold Schwarzenegger.
An IFBB Hall of Famer and 2-time 60+ Masters Olympia winner, Corney was known for his classically strong posing style, which was captured in the renowned bodybuilding documentary film "Pumping Iron." Powerlifter Platz (a.k.a. "Quadfather"and former Athlete Rep at WWE CEO Vince McMahon's WBF World Bodybuilding Federation) is known for his awesome, muscular legs and, amid fan debate, landing in 3rd place at the 1981 Olympia (won by 2-time Mr. Olympia IFBB Pro Franco Columbu, who competed in the inaugural WSM contest in 1977, along with TV's "Incredible Hulk" IFBB Pro Lou Ferrigno). A big personality in the bodybuilding world, Bannout (a.k.a. "The Lion of Lebanon") is known for his bold challenges to fellow competitors during his heyday and, to date, being one of three men to notch a single victory at Joe Weider's Olympia Weekend (the "Super Bowl of bodybuilding"). Over a 17-year competitive career, Bannout racked up 17 IFBB pro victories and last competed at the 2011 Pro World Masters Championships (won by 2008 Mr. Olympia IFBB Pro Dexter Jackson, another one-time Sandow trophy winner.)
