Just Announced: The International Sports Hall of Fame (ISHOF) inducts new honorees during the world's largest multi-sport festival, the Arnold Sports Festival in Columbus, Ohio, (February 28 - March 3), which, in 2013, celebrates the 25th Anniversary of the IFBB Pro Arnold Schwarzenegger Classic Bodybuilding Championships (an International Federation of Bodybuilding & Fitness IFBB Pro Olympia Qualification Series contest).
The 2013 Hall of Fame Inductees and recipients of ISHOF gold medallions: IFBB Pro Franco Columbu (WSM World's Strongest Man competitor, Olympic weightlifter and 2-time Mr. Olympia); Archie Griffin (only 2-time winner of college football's prestigious Heisman Trophy, 3-time collegiate football All American, NFL National Football League player, member of National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame Board of Directors); Earl "The Pearl" Monroe (National Basketball Association NBA Hall of Fame basketball player, named among "50 Greatest Players," served on President's Council on Physical Fitness and Health); Bruno Sammartino (longest-running World Wide Wrestling Federation WWWF champion); and Blaine Carew Wilson (first 5-time consecutive USA Gymnastics national champion).
The "So What?":
Formed by Dr. Robert Goldman, former world champion athlete with over 20 world records and Chairman of Sports Medicine committees in over 180 nations, the ISHOF launched in 2012. "It was time we had a comprehensive Hall of Fame, that recognized athletes of all sports worldwide," says Bob Goldman. "For not only their remarkable contributions as an athlete during their competitive years, but also recognizing their human capacity for giving back to society through charitable works." The ISHOF is headquartered at the Stark Center -- the world's largest physical culture and sports museum located at the University of Texas at Austin.
As previously reported in "Andrew Oye's Pro-Muscle Report," the 2012 International Sports Hall of Fame inductees included: "Governator" IFBB Pro Arnold Schwarzenegger (7-time Mr. Olympia, former California Governor, and Hollywood movie actor starring in projects like "Terminator," "Conan the Barbarian," and "Pumping Iron"); Mark Henry (World's Strongest Man competitor, WWE World Wrestling Entertainment and weightlifting champion); Randy Couture (MMA mixed martial artist, Ultimate Fighting Championships UFC Hall of Fame world champion); Jack LaLanne (fitness icon and legend); IFBB Pro Cory Everson (6-time Ms. Olympia); and James Lorimer (Arnold Classic and Arnold Sports Festival promoter).
Andrew Oye's Verdict:
The ISHOF induction ceremony is a welcomed effort to highlight greatness in a cross-section of the diverse sports world that is also covered in MUSCLE INK Magazine. Going forward, it will be interesting to see the variety of future inductees that will arrive via all sectors -- from traditional sports whose best athletes play in major events like the World Series and Super Bowl, to strength sports that set strongman records, to individual sports that yield Olympic medals, to unconventional sports that combine disciplines or entertainment, to combat sports that involve MMA and boxing, to physique sports that produce champions at Joe Weider's Olympia Weekend.
