The Scoop: Recently Reported: IFBB Pro League athletes and athletes from other sports leagues had career updates or made recent guest appearances at various sports, bodybuilding, physique and fitness events. The latest "Andrew Oye's Pro-Muscle Report" Pro Athletes Roundup includes a flexer on stages who also fights in cages, some football players turned players in physique sports, and some Olympia-bound players in "bodybuilding's Super Bowl."
The "So What?": Over the weekend, IFBB Pro Robert Burneika made an appearance at an Open Air Festival entertainment event in the Netherlands. The Lithuanian bodybuilder is also an MMA fighter will host his first annual Burneika Sports Classic Championships, a Bodybuilding and Fitness International Tournament in Marijampole, Lithuania in October. Retired IFBB Pro Danny Padilla (a.k.a. "The Giant Killer" and a former competitor in WWE CEO Vince McMahon's WBF World Bodybuilding Federation) was inducted into the Muscle Beach Hall of Fame at the Mr. & Ms. Muscle Beach bodybuilding in Venice, California. IFBB Pro Fred Smalls and IFBB Pro Evan Centopani were guest-posers at the Sportsworld Classic Championships in Trinidad and Tobago
Several athletes were spotted at the NPC Team Universe Bodybuilding Championships in Teaneck, New Jersey, including IFBB Pro Victor Martinez (winner of the Arnold Sports Festival's 2007 IFBB Pro Arnold Schwarzenegger Classic Bodybuilding Championships and 2011 Arnold Classic Europe), IFBB Pro Tanji Johnson (2011 Arnold Classic Europe Fitness Champion and 8-time Ms. Fitness Olympia contender), IFBB Pro Juan Morel (2015 New York Pro Champion), IFBB Pro Sadik Hadzovic (2015 Arnold Classic Physique Champion), IFBB Pro Rob Youells (who turned pro at last year's Team Universe contest), and Mike O'Hearn (powerlifter/bodybuilder and "Titan" from TV's "American Gladiators").
At the Team Universe Championships, many National Physique Committee amateur competitors qualified for IFBB professional status and the ability to enter IFBB Pro Olympia Qualification Series contests. A former National Football League NFL Pro Football Player (for the Green Bay Packers, Denver Broncos, Oakland Raiders, Minnesota Vikings), new IFBB Pro Javon Walker qualified for pro status in the Physique Division. In the 1997 Major League Baseball MLB draft, Walker was selected by the Florida Marlins (now known as the Miami Marlins), and played in the organization's minor leagues for three years.
In the Bodybuilding Division, new IFBB Pro Jason "Jay" Amato -- a 25-year-old, 6'2", 240-pound, former high-school football player – was the winner of the Heavyweight Class and Overall title. Amato had placed 10th in the Heavyweight Class at this contest in 2013 – the year former NFL Pro Football Player (Philadelphia Eagles, New York Jets) IFBB Pro Malcolm Marshall turned pro in the Masters Division.) Also earning IFBB Pro cards and qualifying for pro status at the 2015 Team Universe: new IFBB Pro Tom Jimenez (Masters 40+ Lightweight), new IFBB Pro Omar Bautista (Masters 35+ Lightweight), new IFBB Pro Walter Martin (Masters 35+ Middleweight), new IFBB Pro Dorian Adams (Masters 35+ Heavyweight), new IFBB Pro B. Quick (Masters 50+), and new IFBB Pro John Meadows (Masters 35+ Middleweight and Masters 35+ Overall; Masters 40+ Heavyweight and Masters 40+ Overall).
Andrew Oye's Verdict: While 70+ Team U. competitors were starting their IFBB professional journeys, athletes already in the pro ranks are starting to hone their sights on September. IFBB Pro Shawn Rhoden posted a new video clip showing the early stages of his contest-preparation training for Joe Weider's Olympia Weekend. Several months ago it was hinted that IFBB Pro Mamdouh Elssbiay (a.k.a. "Big Ramy") might be the featured guest-poser at this past weekend's NPC Independence Day Classic Championships in Irving, Texas. However, he didn’t make an appearance -- perhaps focusing even greater attention to his own prep for the upcoming "Super Bowl of bodybuilding," where both he and Rhoden (along with IFBB Pro Roelly Winklaar, IFBB Pro Dennis Wolf, IFBB Pro Branch Warren, a.k.a. "Quadrasaurus," and IFBB Pro Ronny Rockel, a.k.a. "The Rock") will challenge reigning 4-time Mr. Olympia IFBB Pro Phil Heath for the title and Sandow trophy.
