Legends Update, Special Honors, Tribute to a Champion, Andrew Oye's IFBB Pro Athletes Roundup
Just Announced: A campaign has been launched to honor legendary IFBB Pro Serge Nubret with the IFBB Pro Arnold Schwarzenegger Classic Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013. In part, the campaign leader's recognition request (posted on Facebook.com
) reads as follows:
"My goal is for Serge Nubret to be honored at the 2013 Arnold Classic Lifetime Achievement Award ceremony. If you could forward this message on to Jim and Bob Lorimar or those responsible for making such decisions, such as Arnold Schwarzenegger. I have created a campaign... to spread awareness of this."
"I am responsible for the English translation of Serge Nubret's autobiography, originally entitled '70 Years Young' before he passed away... If this event goes ahead, I assume it will take place in similar fashion to the 2012 Award, posthumously received by Bob Kennedy. I can organize the closest of Serge Nubret's family and friends to be in attendance at the Arnold Classic and the award ceremony but nobody can replace Serge Nubret himself being there. It would be in honor of his legacy and all he did for the sport of bodybuilding."
The "So What?":
As reported in MUSCLE INK Magazine's "Andrew Oye's Pro-Muscle Report," actor, author, and legendary professional bodybuilder Serge Nubret passed away last year (October 6, 1938 - April 19, 2011). After serving as Vice President of the Europe IFBB federation from 1970-1975, Nubret founded the WABBA federation in 1976.
In addition to sharing the camaraderie of sportsmanship, Nubret competed against actor and 7-time Mr. Olympia IFBB Pro Arnold Schwarzenegger (star of "Terminator" and "Conan the Barbarian") in three editions of the "Super Bowl of bodybuilding" -- Joe Weider's IFBB Pro
League Mr. Olympia contest -- in 1972, 1974, and 1975 (prior to the
advent of the newly implemented IFBB Pro Olympia Qualification Series
Point System). Their final Olympia face-off was featured in the renowned
bodybuilding documentary "Pumping Iron," which also starred TV's
"Incredible Hulk" IFBB Pro Lou Ferrigno.
Past Arnold Classic Lifetime Achievement Award honorees include: International Federation of Bodybuilding & Fitness and Mr. Olympia Founder Joe Weider; 8-time Mr. Olympia IFBB Pro Lee Haney; Fitness Legend Jack LaLanne; 3-time Mr. Universe and IFBB Hall of Fame Inductee Reg Park; 3-time Mr. Olympia IFBB Pro Frank Zane; 5-time Mr. Universe and IFBB Hall of Famer Bill Pearl; 6-time Ms. Olympia IFBB Pro Cory Everson; Powerlifter and 2-time Mr. Olympia IFBB Pro Franco Columbu; Actor and Mr. Universe Lou Ferrigno, Hollywood Actor and Director Sylvester Stallone, Entrepreneur Ben Weider, and Publisher Robert Kennedy.
Andrew Oye's Verdict:
Among IFBB Pro League athletes of the "Golden Era," Serge Nubret impacted physical culture with one of the most aesthetic physiques to ever grace the bodybuilding landscape. We'll have to see if that, coupled with his other contributions to the sport of competitive bodybuilding, warrant a posthumous honor from the team behind the Arnold Sports Festival and Arnold Classic Bodybuilding Championships. Born on the French-Caribbean Islands of Guadeloupe, Serge Nubret is the only physique competitor to have won six world titles with four different bodybuilding federations (NABBA, WBBG, WABBA, IFBB).
