The Item: Career Updates, Special Appearances, Andrew Oye's IFBB Pro Athletes Roundup

The Scoop: Recently Announced: IFBB Pro League athletes had career updates or made recent guest appearances at various sports, bodybuilding, physique and fitness events. The latest "Andrew Oye's Pro-Muscle Report" Pro Athletes Roundup includes a retiree ruminating on a return to the sport, a pro rising the ranks, and a repeat champ reminiscing on his past.

Over the last two weekends, multiple pros athletes hit the guest-posing circuit, providing intermission entertainment at NPC contests across the country. IFBB Pro Gunter Schlierkamp was the featured guest-poser at the NPC Washington Ironman Championships. IFBB Pro Dennis Wolf hit the stage at the NPC Natural Northern Bodybuilding Championships in Cleveland. IFBB Pro David Henry appeared at the NPC Continental USA Bodybuilding Championships in Chicago. Along with an appearance by 8-time Mr. Olympia IFBB Pro Ronnie Coleman, IFBB Pro Kevin English posed at the NPC Eastern USA Bodybuilding Championships in Manhattan.

The "So What?": Earlier this year, reports circulated that Gunter Schlierkamp plans to return to bodybuilding competition after a five-year hiatus. Fellow German Dennis Wolf is still celebrating a 5th place finish at Joe Weider's Olympia Weekend last month (won by IFBB Pro Jay Cutler) after not placing at the 2009 Mr. Olympia contest. In September, Kevin English was crowned the Olympia 202 Showdown Champion, topping runner-up David Henry for the second time in a row.

After his guest-posing routine in New York, English approached the podium and expressed words of gratitude to sponsors and promoters, saying, "I remember sitting in this very audience years ago, watching guys onstage, hoping I would have the physique to compete. And now, God willing, I'm the best in the world in my weight division."

Andrew Oye's Verdict: Since athletes theoretically present their "best" at the Olympia contest, it's always interesting to see which pros can hold on to remnants of their "best" the longest for post-Olympia guest appearances. In the case of "German Giant" Gunter Schlierkamp, who has been absent from the contest stage since the 2006 Olympia, it will be even more interesting to see if he actually makes a comeback with the any semblance of the physique he displayed in his heyday. Also a movie actor, Schlierkamp grew up idolizing 7-time Mr. Olympia IFBB Pro Arnold Schwarzenegger, and he placed 4th at the Arnold Sports Festival's 2004 Arnold Classic Bodybuilding Championships. The 1993 Mr. Universe, Schlierkamp is the first bodybuilder to defeat the legendary Ronnie Coleman in a post-Olympia contest (at the 2002 Show of Strength Championships).
