Career Updates, Legends Update, Special Appearances, Andrew Oye's IFBB Pro Athletes Roundup
Recently Reported: IFBB Pro League athletes had career updates or made guest appearances at various sports, bodybuilding, physique and fitness events. The latest "Andrew Oye's Pro-Muscle Report" Pro Athletes Roundup includes old-school and new-school IFBB Pro Olympia contenders and champions.
The "So What?":
International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness Hall of Fame IFBB Pro Lee Labrada (a.k.a. "Mass With Class") will serve as a guest commentator, alongside legendary 8-time Ms. Olympia IFBB Pro Lenda Murray, for a live broadcast of this weekend's 2012 Masters Olympia Bodybuilding Championships in Miami, Florida (December 8). The last Masters Olympia contest was staged in 2003 and won by IFBB Pro Claude Groulx.
While legendary 8-time Mr. Olympia IFBB Pro Ronnie Coleman moves on to the Midwest leg of his ongoing tour of special appearances (with stops in Colorado, New Mexico and Texas), newly crowned Olympia 212 Showdown Champion IFBB Pro Flex Lewis embarks on a coast-to-coast tour (with stops in New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and California).
Andrew Oye's Verdict:
Lee Labrada (who I interviewed for my "Art of War" article series on competitive bodybuilding presentation) placed in the Top 4 contestants in seven consecutive Mr. Olympia contests in the 1980s and 1990s (during the reigns of 8-time Mr. Olympia IFBB Pro Lee Haney and 6-time Mr. Olympia IFBB Pro Dorian Yates), in addition to claiming a 2nd place finish at the Arnold Sports Festival's 1993 IFBB Pro Arnold Schwarzenegger Classic Bodybuilding Championships (won by IFBB Pro Flex Wheeler). Along the way, he competed against names like IFBB Pro Rich Gaspari, IFBB Pro Kevin Levrone, IFBB Pro Shawn Ray, IFBB Pro Francis Benfatto, IFBB Pro Vince Taylor, IFBB Pro Mike Matarazzo, IFBB Pro Andreas Munzer, IFBB Pro Berry DeMey, IFBB Pro Pavol Jablonicky, IFBB Pro Eddie Robinson, WBF+IFBB Pro Gary Strydom, and "Incredible Hulk" IFBB Pro Lou Ferrigno.
As I continue my MUSCLE INK Magazine Legends Series and cover the IFBB Pro Olympia Qualification Series leading to Joe Weider's Olympia Weekend, I enjoy hearing the viewpoints of the classic bodybuilders. Last week, Labrada proudly recalled how the National Physique Committee NPC chairman asked him after the Prejudging round at the 1985 NPC National Bodybuilding Championships if he had his passport ready. "I knew when he asked that I was in the running to win...because those who won the Nationals went on to compete in the IFBB Mr. Universe," says Labrada. "I did win my class at Nationals. Two weeks later, I won the Mr. Universe and became an IFBB professional."
