The Item: Career Updates, Andrew Oye's IFBB Pro Athletes Roundup
The Scoop: Recently reported: Last week, during an online "Ask The Pros" Q&A, reigning Mr. Olympia Jay Cutler pulled out his crystal ball and made a career prediction. He announced that he will compete at the 2008 IFBB Mr. Olympia contest at Joe Weider's Olympia Weekend
and at least one more time in 2009. When asked if he would call it quits
after this year's Mr. O. contest, the resilient 290-pound Boston native vowed, "If I win, I
won't retire. If I lose, I won't retire. This will not be my last
Olympia. I'll be on the Olympia stage in 2009. Win, lose or draw, I'll
be there." Cutler's pre-game top picks of IFBB Pro League athletes for the Big Show this September:
"I will win. The remaining five will be
Dexter Jackson,
Phil Heath,
Dennis Wolf,
Kai. Victor, I don't know if he's competing. He will be in there if he does. Melvin could be there, maybe Silvio."
The "So What?": As reported in "Andrew Oye's Pro-Muscle Report," after his first Olympia win
in 2006, many speculated that IFBB Pro Jay Cutler would tackle the "Super Bowl of Bodybuilding" two more times and
ride off into the Vegas sunset with three Olympia Sandow trophies. His reign has
tasted controversy; particularly his 2007 victory over what many
considered a better-conditioned
IFBB Pro Victor Martinez, last year's Runner-Up.
Andrew Oye's Verdict; Jay Cutler (who earned his IFBB Pro card at the 1996 NPC National Bodybuilding Championships) had knocked on the Olympia door as 2nd place Runner-Up to 8-time Mr. Olympia IFBB Pro Ronnie Coleman four times before he took the crown. That long battle is why projections from both fans and the man himself are being deliberated. It's about how much gas a champion has left in the tank and the legacy he leaves with how gracefully he exits the competitive stage. Cutler has had the benefit of watching how past multiple-title Mr. Olympias like IFBB Pro Lee Haney, IFBB Pro Arnold Schwarzenegger, IFBB Pro Dorian Yates, IFBB Pro Frank Zane, IFBB Pro Franco Columbu, IFBB Pro Sergio Oliva and IFBB Pro Larry Scott have done it.
