The Item: Career Updates, Contest Preparation, Andrew Oye's IFBB Pro Athletes Roundup

The Scoop: Recently Announced: IFBB Pro Mike Van Wyck is preparing to make his debut on the professional bodybuilding stage at the 2010 IFBB New York Pro Bodybuilding Championships (May 8). "I'm thrilled to see what kind of impact I can make and what kind of introduction I can make to the world of bodybuilding," says Van Wyck, who uses a high-volume training style year round. "The training style doesn't really change throughout the year. [My trainer and I] just adjust it...I'll start carbing up on Wednesday to see how dry and freaky I can come in. Things are going well so far."

The "So What?": In his first attempt, the 6'0", 280-pound Mike Van Wyck earned his IFBB Pro card by winning the Super-Heavyweight and Overall titles at the 2009 CBBF Canadian National Bodybuilding Championships in Vancouver, BC (past winners include IFBB Pro Ben Pakulski and IFBB Pro Fouad Abiad). Stepping onstage with experienced IFBB Pro League athletes like IFBB Pro Toney Freeman, IFBB Pro Dennis Wolf and powerlifter/IFBB Pro Johnnie Jackson this weekend will test the mettle of the 29-year-old rookie. And even though, as reported in "Andrew Oye's Pro-Muscle Report," a high placing at the New York Pro translates to an Olympia qualification to challenge 3-time Mr. Olympia IFBB Pro Jay Cutler at Joe Weider's Olympia Weekend in Las Vegas, the thought doesn't psyche-out the young Canadian beast. Van Wyck says, "I'm confident in my abilities. I know that if I bring the right package to the stage and bring my conditioning the way it should be, I should do well. My goal is always just to beat myself."

Andrew Oye's Verdict: A former University of Rhode Island football player featured on the cover of MUSCLE INK Magazine, Mike Van Wyck boasts one the widest wingspans (i.e., lat spreads) to land on the professional bodybuilding scene. He has acknowledged that "wheels" were his issue and vowed to work harder on leg development. When his lower half balances his upper half, watch the athlete nicknamed the "Toronto Volcano" erupt. The IFBB New York Pro (formerly known as the Night of Champions) counts among its past champions 8-time Mr. Olympia winners IFBB Pro Lee Haney and IFBB Pro Ronnie Coleman, 6-time Mr. Olympia IFBB Pro Dorian Yates, as well as IFBB Pro Robby Robinson, IFBB Pro Albert Beckles, IFBB Pro Lee Labrada, IFBB Pro Gary Strydom (champion of WWE CEO Vince McMahon's former WBF World Bodybuilding Federation -- for which Hall of Famer IFBB Pro Tom Platz was Talent Director), IFBB Pro Phil Hill, IFBB Pro Vince Taylor, IFBB Pro Mohammed Benaziza, 2-time Arnold Classic Champ IFBB Pro Kevin Levrone, IFBB Pro Porter Cottrell, IFBB Pro Mike Francois, IFBB Pro Chris Cormier, IFBB Pro Paul Dillet, IFBB Pro Orville Burke, IFBB Pro Markus Ruhl, IFBB Pro Darrem Charles, IFBB Pro Phil Heath, IFBB Pro Chris Cormier, IFBB Pro Melvin Anthony, IFBB Pro Branch Warren, IFBB Pro Evan Centopani and IFBB Pro Flex Wheeler (4-time winner of the Arnold Sports Festival's IFBB Pro Arnold Schwarzenegger Classic Bodybuilding Championships).
