Recently Reported: IFBB Pro League athletes had career updates or made recent guest appearances at various sports, bodybuilding, physique and fitness events. The latest "Andrew Oye's Pro-Muscle Report" Pro Athletes Roundup includes a formerly competitive athlete in the International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness who will now oversee pathways to opportunities for up-and-coming competitive bodybuilders and physique athletes. The "So What?":
A week and a half ago, IFBB Pro Joel Stubbs participated in his first executive meeting as the newly elected President of the BBFF Bahamas Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation, a role he will hold for the next four years after earning the position by a unanimous vote (in March) and replacing the previous official who had held the post for two decades. Excited to guide the organization in a new direction, 47-year-old, Stubbs said, "We want to make sure that we have more transparency within the federation and keep the athletes abreast on all of our developments, so that they can be a part of what is going on. It's going to be challenging, but having been an athlete all of my life, I'm looking forward to making a contribution as an administrator…I'm up for the challenge."
Stubbs has slated the organization's first event as the Novice Bodybuilding Championships in Grand Bahama (June 27), while making plans for a national championships event in July. He plans for his executive board to meet with the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture to encourage physique development at the high-school level. Stubbs also wants to draw former competitors back to the competitive bodybuilding stage and increase the Bahamas' visibility on the international scene. "We want to give the novices the kind of recognition that they deserve."Andrew Oye's Verdict:
Known for his incredible wing-span back shots, Nassau-born Joel Stubbs earned his IFBB Pro card after wining the 2003 IFBB Central American and Caribbean Championships. The 6'3", 300-pound former commercial-airline pilot competed at the 2009 Olympia (won by IFBB Pro Jay Cutler) and his last contest was the 2010 Europa SuperShow Dallas Pro Bodybuilding Championships.
It's admirable when retired athletes take their experience from competing and use it on the managerial side to create opportunities for athletes with hopes of participating in IFBB Pro Olympia Qualification Series contests and possibly competing at the "Super Bowl of bodybuilding" -- Joe Weider's Olympia Weekend. In the footprints of IFBB founder Joe Weider, Stubbs joins the ranks of former competitors who have promoted contests or led federations -- like 7-time Mr. Olympia Arnold Schwarzenegger, who promotes the Arnold Sports Festival's IFBB Pro Arnold Schwarzenegger Classic Bodybuilding Championships; the late IFBB Pro Serge Nubret, who founded the WABBA World Amateur Bodybuilding Association in 1976; IFBB Pro Moe Elmoussawi, current President of the NZIFBB New Zealand International Federation of Bodybuilding; Masters-level competitor Dr. Wolfgang Schober, current President of the ÖABFF Austrian Amateur Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation; among others.
