The Item: Career Updates, Andrew Oye's IFBB Pro Athletes Roundup

The Scoop: Retired IFBB Pro Christian Lobarede continues to support competitive bodybuilding in his native Chile. He hosts the Lobarede Classic Bodybuilding Championships, which has featured celebrated IFBB Pro League athletes as guest posers, including 8-time Mr. Olympia IFBB Pro Ronnie Coleman and 3-time Mr. Olympia IFBB Pro Jay Cutler. This year, Lobarede is training Chile's team of top bodybuilders for the largest fitness event in South America where athletes representing over 24 countries will compete.

The "So What?": A martial artist, Christian Lobarede practiced kempo karate, winning national championships in the mid 90's. He made his pro bodybuilding debut at the 1999 IFBB Toronto Pro Invitational (won by IFBB Pro Pavol Jablonicky). He followed that with the 1999 IFBB Night of Championships (which is now known as the IFBB New York Pro Bodybuilding Championships, where IFBB Pro Paul Dillet took the win) and went on to represent his country in many professional contests in the USA, Europe and Australia.

Nicknamed "Toro," Lobarede was the only Latin male professional bodybuilder in South America at one point. As reported in "Andrew Oye's Pro-Muscle Report," the 6'0", 262-pound Lobarede once lived and trained in California, while maintaining several sports nutrition stores and gyms in Chile. Unfortunately, a health setback in 2007 caused him to retire from the competitive stage and move back to Chile to focus on recovery. His final competition was the 2007 IFBB Atlantic City Pro Championships (won by IFBB Pro Johnnie Jackson).

Andrew Oye's Verdict: While Christian Lobarede never made it to pro bodybuilding's largest stages -- Joe Weider's Olympia Weekend Mr. Olympia Championships or the Arnold Sports Festival's IFBB Pro Arnold Schwarzenegger Classic Bodybuilding Championships, some fellow pros of Latin descent have, including IFBB Pro Gustavo Badell, 2007 Arnold Classic Champion IFBB Pro Victor Martinez, Olympia 202 Showdown contender IFBB Pro Eduardo Correa, 2-time Mr. Olympia Runner-Up IFBB Pro Lee Labrada, and, of course, 3-time Mr. Olympia IFBB Pro Sergio Oliva. Now that Lobarede preps athletes for IFBB pro competition around the world, he is doing his part to increase the profile of his chosen sport in a country still learning to appreciate it...and he just might launch the next Chilean champion-level athlete to compete on the international scale.
