Just Announced: Over the weekend, IFBB Pro Mamdouh Elssbiay (a.k.a. "Big Ramy") won the 2015 IFBB Pro Arnold Schwarzenegger Classic Brasil Bodybuilding Championships at the Arnold Sports Festival in Rio de Janeiro. IFBB Pro Cedric McMillan was named the 2nd place runner-up. Dropping a spot from last year, IFBB Pro Juan Morel took 3rd place. IFBB Pro Victor Martinez finished in 4th place. Arnold Classic Brasil inaugural 2013 champion, IFBB Pro Brandon Curry landed in 5th place.
The remaining field of physiques: IFBB Pro Toney Freeman (6th), IFBB Pro Fred Smalls, up three spots from 2014
(7th), IFBB Pro Lionel Beyeke, slipping four rungs from last year (8th), IFBB Pro Jose Luis Rodriguez Oyola (9th), and IFBB Pro Marius Dohne (10th).The "So What?":
As reported in "Andrew Oye's Pro Muscle Report," the IFBB Pro Olympia Qualification Series Point System (1st automatic qualification, 2nd - 5 Points, 3rd - 4 Points, 4th - 3 Points, 5th - 2 Points) applies to IFBB Pro League athletes' eligibility to compete at Joe Weider's Olympia Weekend to challenge reigning Mr. Olympia IFBB Pro Phil Heath in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Arnold Classic Brasil/Brazil is a Tier 3 contest, i.e., one of few to award more points per placing than Tiers 4 contests. Last year's Arnold Classic Brasil Champion, IFBB Pro Steve Kuclo (a Texas firefighter/paramedic), did not return to defend the title. Earlier this year, IFBB Pro Ronny Rockel announced he would not compete in Rio.
Jose Luis Rodriguez Oyola (who earned his IFBB Pro card by winning the 2014 Arnold Amateur Bodybuilding Championships in Brazil) made his pro debut this year. Defending her title from 2014, IFBB Pro Bethany Cisternino (wife of IFBB Pro Guy Cisternino) won the Pro Fitness Division again this year. Ironically, matching the sweep achieved last year by his current rival (Zydrunas Zavickas, as both chase Mariusz Pudzianowski's 5-time WSM record), Brian Shaw won the strongman challenge in Brazil, becoming the second pro strength athlete to win the WSM World's Strongest Man, Arnold Strongman Classic USA, and Arnold Strongman Classic Brasil titles in a single year.
In addition to IFBB President Rafael Santonja, many pro athletes appeared at the Arnold Classic Brazil Fitness Expo including: 4-time Mr. Olympia IFBB Pro Jay Cutler, Brazilian IFBB Pro Eduardo Correa, Fitness IFBB Pro Oksana Grishina, IFBB Pro Shawn Rhoden, IFBB Pro Hidetada Yamagishi, IFBB Pro Roman Fritz, IFBB Pro Jason Huh, IFBB Pro Andy Haman, IFBB Pro Larissa Reis, IFBB Pro Fernando Noronha Maradona, MMA Fighter "Toquinho" Rousimar Palhares (World Series of Fighting Welterweight Champion), and Martial Artist and Hollywood Action Movie Actor Chuck Norris (as part of the Arnold Fights MMA World Festival).Andrew Oye's Verdict:
While the two previous editions of the Arnold Schwarzenegger Classic Brasil created headlines akin to "Uproar in Rio," this year's contest wasn't so much about an uproar than a tossup. The final showdown for the top spot was between two favored athletes who entered with differing backstories. On one side: American Cedric McMillan, the US Army Sergeant who had been unexpectedly disqualified at the inaugural Arnold Classic Brasil (for missing a mandatory pre-contest competitors' meeting), which he had been forecasted to win, and brings an impressive blend of aesthetics and size. On the other side: Egyptian Mamdouh Elssbiay, the 300-pound beast who had yet to battle on any of the many Arnold Classic stages (USA, Europe, Brasil, Australia), and brings an overwhelming combo of mass and shape. Since 100% conditioning was not the deciding factor for either side, it seemed a tossup was in the air for the judges to decide. While McMillan has nice lines and an appearance of completeness, Elssbiay possesses a round musculature that pops at overpowering dimensions -- and yet the latter has also maintained a midsection/waistline usually associated with a build like that of the former. In then end, it was decided the Elssbiay's enormity earned him a spot in the field at the "Super Bowl of bodybuilding," and "Big Ramy" looks ready to play.
