A metabolite of ornithine and precursor to arginine, this non-essential amino acid is a component of the urea cycle, helping to rid the body of ammonia after muscle contraction. It plays an important part in nitric oxide production by providing readily available material for conversion to arginine. Citrulline may also stimulate the immune system and increase energy.
