Elite XT
Elite XT by Dymatize

Price was a major factor for me in choosing this. Taste ought to be labeled “chocolate cake batter” because it’s extremely strong and sweet. I used one scoop of chocolate and one of vanilla each time to even it out. Mixability in 16 to 20 ounces of fat free skim is below average compared to other multipurpose protein’s I’ve used. However, the amino acid profile is good and if you can get it for a great price, it is still a very good buy. This is a good multipurpose protein for a beginner.

This is such a great idea for a product that I don’t know why more companies don’t offer a version of it. It has a much better nutrient profile than grocery store or big-box store psyllium husk powders. The scoop that it comes with is big – I just use one tablespoon twice per day instead and it works fine. The only downside is the taste – be ready to throw it in with your protein shake or spike it with Crystal Light packets. Not a glamorous product, but VPX built a winner here.

Amino 1
Amino 1 by Muscle Pharm

In this crowded segment, I chose this because of its stamina support. “Mixes easily and completely” is not propaganda - it actually does. Am pleased with the stamina boost, but feel that it needs more than 3 grams of BCAAs to combat DOMS. As 3-4 grams of BCAAs seem to be the norm in this segment, I would spike each serving with 5 or so grams of standalone BCAA powder if I were to try this again. But this is a solid product for its stamina support, mixability, and taste (cherry limeade).

Pro Gainer
Pro Gainer by Optimum

Chose this product over competitors as I don’t have access to a blender post-workout and wanted the added vitamins/minerals. Mixability is excellent for a malto-based gainer – about 95% in a shaker with 16-20 oz of fat free skim. Haven’t gotten huge mass gains, but have seen good strength gains, particularly on deadlifts. Why only four stars? A little pricey and am not sure how vital the added vitamins/minerals are. But this is good if you want to do a malto-based gainer without a blender.

Opti-Men by Optimum

As it’s been a few years since I’ve lifted seriously, I chose this for its reputation for being a good, solid product for beginners. It’s gotten the job done, and I’ve noticed less of that “toxic urine feeling” towards the end of the workday that I used to get when taking grocery store/big-box store brand alternatives. Would absolutely recommend this to another beginner.
