Whey Protein Isolate and Your Appetite

For years, headlines regarding whey protein isolate have been dominated by research illustrating its superiority as a protein source and its firm place in the diets of bodybuilders and athletes who desire to gain more lean mass and improve their body composition. The Obesity Society is a premier meeting of scientists, physicians, nurses, educators, dietitians and other allied health professionals devoted to the study of obesity. This study, presented by Australian researchers examined the impact of whey protein isolate and casein protein on satiety in overweight and obese individuals. Equal numbers of research participants were assigned to either a control group, whey protein isolate or casein protein for a period of 12 weeks. All participants were required to assess their feelings of hunger and appetite after 6 and 12 weeks of ingesting their assigned supplement. The authors concluded that whey protein was more effective than casein protein or a control meal in increasing satiety and feelings of fullness towards a lunch meal after both six and twelve weeks of consuming the assigned meal. The authors also noted that this effect may not persist for a meal several hours later leading them to indicate that the appetite-controlling effects of protein may be best served for meals ingested in close proximity to when the protein meal was ingested.
These findings are important for all individuals who are attempting to lose weight or simply want to control their weight. These findings in addition to the abundant sources of evidence which support using whey protein isolate as a means to improve one's body composition also suggest that whey protein isolate can be used as part of a general healthy diet or as part of a weight loss program.
