For years, headlines regarding whey protein isolate have been dominated by research illustrating its superiority as a protein source and its firm place in the diets of bodybuilders and athletes who desire to gain more lean mass and improve their body composition.  A great deal of this focus centers upon the fact that whey protein isolate contains more essential amino acids than any other source of protein.  When one considers these amino acids are needed exclusively to build and rebuild muscle protein it is easier to understand why whey protein isolate is held in such high regard.  To say the bodybuilding or " muscle-building" market has dominated whey protein isolate would be an understatement, but evidence continues to trickle in for the positive impact it can have on general aspects of health.  For example, research has indicated for years that bioactive fractions in whey proteins support immune function and may provide protection against free radicals and oxidative stress, but a recent presentation of data at the annual meeting of the Obesity Society in October 2011 provided evidence of the impact whey protein isolate may have on aspects of hunger or appetite in overweight and obese individuals.  The Obesity Society is a premier meeting of scientists, physicians, nurses, educators, dietitians and other allied health professionals devoted to the study of obesity.  This study, presented by Australian researchers examined the impact of whey protein isolate and casein protein on satiety in overweight and obese individuals.  Equal numbers of research participants were assigned to either a control group, whey protein isolate or casein protein for a period of 12 weeks.  All participants were required to assess their feelings of hunger and appetite after 6 and 12 weeks of ingesting their assigned supplement.  The authors concluded that whey protein was more effective than casein protein or a control meal in increasing satiety and feelings of fullness towards a lunch meal after both six and twelve weeks of consuming the assigned meal.  The authors also noted that this effect may not persist for a meal several hours later leading them to indicate that the appetite-controlling effects of protein may be best served for meals ingested in close proximity to when the protein meal was ingested.

These findings are important for all individuals who are attempting to lose weight or simply want to control their weight.  These findings in addition to the abundant sources of evidence which support using whey protein isolate as a means to improve one's body composition also suggest that whey protein isolate can be used as part of a general healthy diet or as part of a weight loss program.  In conclusion, excellent sources of whey protein isolate are available in products such as Nytro Whey Elite and Nytro Whey Ultra Elite available at ProSource.  Outside of these products being outstanding sources of high quality protein, these proteins can be used to help promote greater improvements in muscle growth and recent evidence suggests it may be an effective addition for individuals who desire to control their appetite and seek ways to control their caloric intake.
