The Scoop:
Just announced: Over the weekend in Las Vegas, Mark Alvisi won both the
Heavyweight Class and the Overall Title of Mr. USA at the 2009 NPC USA
Bodybuilding Championships. The 5'9?, 215-pounder rolled out west from
Florida on well-sized wheels complete with quad cuts. Alvisi also
brought good proportions to slide ahead of Heavyweight Lee Banks, who
also possessed the aforementioned attributes. Meanwhile, at 5'8" and
230 lbs., with mass and maturity on his side, big Grigori Atoyan bested
a large class of 27 Super-Heavies. Ripped and well-balanced, Daryl Gee
won the Middleweight division. All three earned shiny new IFBB pro
cards at this event.
The "So What?":
Alvisi beat a man who had received as many predictions of class victory
as he did. Grigori had been knocking at the pro-card door for a while,
and after about six hard years can now wipe his brow. 5'5" Gee is fresh
off an overall win at the LA Bodybuilding Championships where he beat
out much larger athletes.
Andrew Oye's verdict: Pro bodybuilding is getting new blood in the form of both young tigers and seasoned lions.
