The Item: Career Updates/Contest Preparation
The Scoop: Recently Announced: IFBB Pro Hidetada Yamagishi is prepping to hit the stage at the IFBB Phoenix Pro Bodybuilding & Fitness Show (February 20). Yamagishi has been spotted busting iron at Gold's Gym Venice with a new trainer in his corner. Is an overall victory is imminent in Mesa, Arizona? Yamagishi says, "Yes. I was 210 lbs. onstage at the last Olympia and now I'm 225 lbs. At two weeks out, I'm already close to my conditioning from the Olympia. I’m going [to Arizona] to win the show."
The "So What?": The 36-year-old carries the pride and the pressure of being Japan's sole IFBB Pro. Yamagishi previously worked with pro trainers Milos Sarcev and Charles Glass. He decided to try devising his own contest-prep plans in 2009, placing 2nd at both the Orlando Pro and Atlantic City Pro. This year, he hooked up with Canadian bodybuilder/trainer Eric DiLauro.
"He's been training with me for the last five weeks," says DiLauro. "He saw how I helped Jay Cutler for the last four years and said he wanted the same kind of intensity. I've never seen [Yamagishi] train so hard, so I think he has a very good chance of being in the Top 3."
Andrew Oye's verdict: DiLauro says Yamigishi has been focusing on hamstrings, back depth and overall thickness. To challenge bigger guys like Toney Freeman and Quincy Taylor, shredded conditioning will be key for Yamagishi.
