ANDREW OYE'S image The Item: Career Updates, Andrew Oye's WBFF Pro Athletes Roundup

The Scoop: Standing at 6'3" and stomping in at 280 lbs., WBFF Pro Frank Budelewski is a really big dude who has faced some really big obstacles in life. But he took giant leaps over those hurdles to return to competitive bodybuilding. I conducted a feature interview with Budelewski for MUSCLE INK Magazine. In an article titled, "WBFF Pro Frank Budelewski: Don't Mess With The Mass Machine," the ever-determined athlete shared his journey from pain to pro bodybuilding.

The "So What?": The Buffalo, NY native was involved in a near-fatal car accident that halted his ability to train for six years, but he fought to rebuild his physique and rejoin the sport he loves. "In 1998, I won runner-up in a body transformation contest, losing over 100 lbs. and completely restructuring and rebuilding my body after the accident," Budelewski says. "Then I did what many thought I couldn't. I didn't just start competing in bodybuilding, I started winning, beating many national-level competitors."

After earning pro status in the WBFF Pro League (founded by retired IFBB Pro Paul Dillet, a competitor at the IFBB Pro Arnold Schwarzenegger Classic Bodybuilding Championships and an Olympia contender in the 1990s era of 6-time Mr. Olympia IFBB Pro Dorian Yates), an injury thwarted Budelewski's plans to make a comeback at the 2009 WBFF World Championships, but he finally managed to hit the stage again at the 2010 World Championships. "While preparing for that [2009] show, I was involved in an accident at work and required serious knee surgery. I couldn't compete at the show or even train for 8 months. It destroyed me mentally. I finally earned something I had only dreamed of achieving, but, to me, it wasn't real until I secured it by stepping onstage in 2010. So, against the disbelief of many, I once again did what many considered impossible."

Andrew Oye's Verdict: With a background that includes unfulfilled attempts to play college football, to appear on MTV's "Tough Enough" pro-wrestling talent-search show, and to participate in WWE World Wrestling Entertainment (owned by Vince McMahon, who also launched the short-lived WBF World Bodybuilding Federation), Frank Budelewski (a.k.a., "Booda") maintains his competitive mindset and a positive outlook regarding future opportunities. For a man whose humility and gratitude are as large as his frame, I hope more chances arrive for him to rise.
