The Item: Publishing/Magazine Contract Signings
The Scoop: Recently reported: IFBB Pro Peter Putnam, along with IFBB Pro figure competitor Jessica Paxson-Putnam, was released from an exclusive magazine contract with publishing company Weider/AMI. The Putnams were the first husband-and-wife team signed by Weider and were often featured as a "golden couple" of fitness.
The "So What?": As is often the case, the situation is not so much a termination as it is simply a non-renewal of exclusivity to create space on the team roster for new or high-profile athletes. "That's exactly what it is, nothing bad or mysterious, but it's commonly known that the mags and supp companies often rotate in new sponsored athletes on a regular basis to give others an opportunity to advance their careers as well," explains FLEX Magazine Creative Director Chris Hobrecker. "We still have a good relationship with Peter and Jess, and you may see them featured again in the mags depending on what they have on the go."
Andrew Oye's verdict: As previously explained, this is simply par for the course. The industry has already seen a lot of mag contract rotation this year. Perhaps we'll see more after (or even before) the Olympia in September.
