ANDREW OYE'S image The Item: Contest Results, New IFBB Pro League Cards, Andrew Oye's IFBB Pro Athletes Roundup

The Scoop: Recently Announced: Over the weekend, new IFBB Pro Todd Jewell won the Super-Heavyweight Class and Overall title at the NPC National Bodybuilding Championships in Miami. Florida. Sporting a massive physique on a solid structure, the 6'0", 265-pound bodybuilder and fitness trainer from Seattle, Washington, smothered the other weight-class winners with sheer size. In the end, Jewell earned an IFBB Pro card and qualification to compete on the contest circuit of the International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness.

The "So What?": Talk about different trajectories! As reported in "Andrew Oye's Pro-Muscle Report," last year's winner, IFBB Pro Robert Burneika, merely skipped from a commendable 2nd place runner-up position in 2009 to the winner's slot in 2010; whereas, Todd Jewell had to make a Herculean leap from 9th place at the 2010 Nationals to the 2011 champion's circle. Along with Jewell, the top athletes in each weight class were also awarded IFBB Pro cards. An Nguyen claimed the Heavyweight Class. Marco Rivera won the Light Heavyweight Class. Alan Bailey led the Middleweight Class. J.B. Bartlett took the Welterweight Class. Luis Santiago was the Lightweight Class winner. Ron Hackaspker won the Bantamweight Class.
Andrew Oye's Verdict: Todd Jewell's journey from so-so spot to top spot has been filled with ups and downs. The 30-year-old former bouncer (who trained with IFBB Pro Mark Dugdale in the past) says growing up in Yakima's farm life prepared him for the toughness bodybuilding requires. "It was there that I learned the meaning of hard work." That carried over to his training. "I began lifting weights when I was about 14, using my father's dumbbells. Like many, I idolized Arnold Schwarzenegger after watching several of his movies including 'Predator' and 'Terminator 2.'"

After his high-school football career, while working as a personal trainer in 1999, Jewell sharpened his focus on physique building. "Between clients, I would read Arnold Schwarzenegger's 'Encyclopedia of Modern Bodybuilding' to get new ideas for my own training and eventually began reading the sections on contest prep and the rules of competition." He placed 4th in the Light-Heavyweight Class at the 2003 NPC Emerald Cup Championships. After winning 1st place and Overall at the 2003 WFNA Rocky Mountain Natural Championships, Jewell took a three-year hiatus. Upon returning, he placed 1st in the Super-Heavyweight Class at the 2007 NPC Emerald Cup, and then placed 7th at the 2007 NPC USA Championships. After nine more national-level contests -- including a 7th place finish at the 2009 NPC Nationals (won by IFBB Pro Cedric McMillan) and 9th place at the 2010 Nationals, while suffering from appendicitis and pancreatitis that led to a 6-month layoff from the gym -- he emerged with pro status and goals to someday challenge those who make it the sport's biggest stages, a.k.a. the Arnold Sports Festival's IFBB Pro Arnold Schwarzenegger Classic Bodybuilding Championships (won by IFBB Pro Branch Warren in 2011) and Joe Weider's Olympia Weekend (won by Mr. Olympia IFBB Pro Phil Heath in 2011).
