The Scoop: Recently Announced: IFBB Pro Mike Van Wyck is preparing to make his debut on the pro stage at the 2010 IFBB New York Pro Bodybuilding Championships (May 8). "I'm thrilled to see what kind of impact I can make and what kind of introduction I can make to the world of bodybuilding," says Van Wyck, who uses a high-volume training style year round. "The training style doesn't really change throughout the year. [My trainer and I] just adjust it...I'll start carbing up on Wednesday to see how dry and freaky I can come in. Things are going well so far."
The "So What?": In his first attempt, the 6'0", 280-pound Van Wyck earned his pro card by winning the 2009 Canadian National Bodybuilding Championships. Stepping onstage with the likes of IFBB Pros Toney Freeman and Dennis Wolf this weekend will test the mettle of the 29-year-old rookie, but the thought doesn't psyche him out, Van Wyck says, "I'm confident in my abilities. I know that if I bring the right package to the stage and bring my conditioning the way it should be, I should do well. My goal is always just to beat myself."
Andrew Oye's verdict: A former University of Rhode Island football player, Van Wyck boasts one the widest wingspans (lat spreads) to come on the scene. He has acknowledged that wheels were the issue and vowed to work harder on leg development. When his bottom half balances the top half, watch the
"
Toronto Volcano" erupt.
