The Item: Contest Results
The Scoop: Just Announced: Over the weekend, IFBB Pro Melvin Anthony won the Open Division of the IFBB Phoenix Pro Bodybuilding & Fitness Show in Mesa, Arizona. The 5'8", 242-pound posing showman delivered full, well-conditioned shape to leap into the 1st place spot. Finishing in 2nd place at 5'5" and 220 lbs. was a super-dry and separated Hidetada Yamagishi, who surprisingly flexed his way past bigger athletes. The pre-show odds-on favorite, 6'2", 290-pound Toney Freeman landed in 3rd place. While not at his sharpest, he still displays top-level density and presence.
In the 202 Division, IFBB Pro Roc Shabazz used a pleasing blend of grainy, veiny musculature and cuts to take the 1st place spot in a small class (literally, with only 8 competitors). A relatively new face with a good structure and nice lines, 5'7", 195-pound Iraqi-Swedish Ahmad Ahmad took 2nd place. X-framed Bola Ojex finished in 3rd place at 5'7" and 200 lbs. of solid Nigerian-British muscle.
The "So What?": The Phoenix Pro kicked off the 2010 pro-contest season. Anthony's victory comes after recent reports that he was released from his supplement company endorsement contract.
Andrew Oye's verdict: Freeman must reacquaint himself with his 100-perecent-level physique if he is to retain (or regain) his rep as a mass-and-aesthetics combo athlete. Meanwhile, Anthony must prepare for new supplement company sponsors to come knocking.
