The Item: IFBB Pro League Contest Results
The Scoop: Just Announced: Over the weekend, Sami Al Haddad won the 90 kg Class and Overall title at Joe Weider's Mr. Olympia Euro Amateur Bodybuilding Championships, which was held in conjunction with the IFBB British Grand Prix and Fitness Expo Weekend. His victory qualified Al Haddad for an IFBB Pro card, which he reportedly declined at this time. Winner of the 100+ kg Class and new IFBB Pro Tomas Bures accepted his pro card and professional athlete status.
The "So What?": The event in London was the first ever fully sanctioned Amateur Olympia event. Recently, Bures placed 2nd in the Heavyweight Class at the 2011 Arnold Schwarzenegger Amateur Bodybuilding Championships. Al Haddad finished in 3rd place in the Light-Heavyweight Class at the 2011 Arnold Amateur in Columbus, OH.
Andrew Oye's verdict: Having an amateur contest associated with the Olympia name will take some getting used to. Does it dilute the "prestige," creating potential confusion with the actual title of Mr. Olympia? Perhaps it's too soon to tell for sure.
