The Scoop: Recently Announced: IFBB Pro Roelly Winklaar announced that he will take off the rest of the IFBB Pro League contest season, which means he will not compete at the 2011 Olympia in Las Vegas (September 16). Winklaar's decision is based on a reported jaw injury and was partially influenced by his disappointing 9th place finish at the 2011 New York Pro Bodybuilding Championships last month.
The "So What?": Roelly Winklaar won the 2010 New York Pro, and perhaps he felt compelled to return to defend his title - despite having competed at four previous contests this year and qualifying for the 2011 Olympia at three of them - which turned out to be a mistake.
"New York was not my best show this year, " admits Winklaar. "I fought for the top-spot lineup. I came in with a lot of hype around me, and I tried to do my best to live up to the hype in the show...for the fans and the sport. But the last couple of months, my body took a hard beating. My team said 'time out.' I'm going to have surgery, take some time off, start over, and be bigger in 2012. Roelly Winklaar will be better in 2012. I will return to the stage and fight my way back to the Olympia stage in 2012."
Andrew Oye's Verdict: Ironically, IFBB Pro Evan Centopani, winner of the 2009 New York Pro Bodybuilding Championships, also just announced that he will skip the Olympia, setting a pattern of NY Pro champs sitting out the big "O" this year.
