The Scoop: Recently announced: Actor and retired IFBB Pro Lou Ferrigno will be a featured guest speaker at East Tennessee State University this week (October 21). In conjunction with Disability Awareness Month, the school's Disability Services and Multicultural Affairs groups organized a powerful, one-night event with Ferrigno, a disability advocate who will tell his heartfelt, motivational life story of growing up with a hearing impairment and how it impacted the pursuit of his two great passions, bodybuilding and acting.
"This forced me to maximize my own potential," says Ferrigno. "I have to
be better than the average person to succeed. That's why I chose
bodybuilding. If I became a world champion, if I could win admiration from my peers, I could do anything."
The "So What?": Brooklyn-born Ferrigno developed an ear infection as an infant that caused him to lose 85 percent of his hearing. Widely recognized for leading role on the TV series "
The Incredible Hulk," Ferrigno once competed on bodybuilding stages at 6' 5" and 275 pounds and appeared in the groundbreaking documentary "
Pumping Iron." He appeared in the 2008 comedy film "I Love You, Man" and, most recently, joined Olympia creator Joe Weider on stage at the event's 45th Anniversary celebration in Las Vegas.
Andrew Oye's verdict: A 2-time Mr. Universe and 2003 IFBB Pro League Hall of Fame Inductee, Ferrigno's latest speaking engagement represents a positive example of Pro Muscle in action that industry insiders always want to see more often.
