Andrew Oye's Pro Muscle Report

The Item: Contest Preparation
The Scoop: Recently Announced: IFBB Pro Jason Huh is preparing to make his professional debut at the 2011 New York Pro Bodybuilding Championships at the Tribeca Performing Arts Theater this weekend (May 28).
"I'm feeling great. I'm looking better than I ever have before a show," says Huh. "Right now my [training] volume is cut in half. I'm still going relatively heavy, but not as heavy as possible. Getting a good pump [in the gym] is my main focus right now." As he closes in on the show, Huh has cut down his normal 6-7 exercises to 3-4 exercises per body part.
The "So What?": Huh earned his IFBB Pro card by winning the Super-Heavyweight Class and the Overall Title at the 2010 NPC USA Bodybuilding Championships in Las Vegas. The 26-year-old Sarasota, Florida resident has developed a unique style of training that centers on constant tension as opposed to the use of extremely heavy poundage, which has caused some cynical gym rats to question his strength level. Can Huh handle the big-boy weights? "I can, but that's never been my main concern. It's about achieving the maximum pump. If I'm doing an exercise, and the pump's not there and I'm not feeling it, I'll switch it up right away."
Andrew Oye's Verdict: As the new IFBB Pro League athlete explains, bodybuilding is not powerlifting. Whatever Jason Huh is doing seems to have worked for him thus far. Now we'll have to see if his methods carry him through higher-level competition.
