ANDREW OYE'S image The Item: Career Updates, Contest Preparation, Andrew Oye's IFBB Pro Athletes Roundup

The Scoop: Recently Announced: IFBB Pro Jason Huh is preparing to make his professional bodybuilding debut in the International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness at the 2011 IFBB New York Pro Bodybuilding Championships at the Tribeca Performing Arts Theater this weekend (May 28).

"I'm feeling great. I'm looking better than I ever have before a show," says Huh. "Right now my [training] volume is cut in half. I'm still going relatively heavy, but not as heavy as possible. Getting a good pump [in the gym] is my main focus right now." As he closes in on the show, Huh has cut down his normal 6-7 exercises to 3-4 exercises per body part.

The "So What?": As reported in "Andrew Oye's Pro-Muscle Report," Jason Huh earned his IFBB Pro card by winning the Super-Heavyweight Class and the Overall Title at the 2010 NPC USA Bodybuilding Championships in Las Vegas. The 26-year-old Sarasota, Florida resident has developed a unique style of training that centers on constant tension as opposed to the use of extremely heavy poundage, which has caused some cynical gym rats to question his strength level. Can Huh handle the big-boy weights? "I can, but that's never been my main concern," says the rookie pro, who competed as an amateur for about six years. "It's about achieving the maximum pump. If I'm doing an exercise, and the pump's not there and I'm not feeling it, I'll switch it up right away."

Andrew Oye's Verdict: As Jason Huh explains, bodybuilding is not powerlifting. (Although, several IFBB Pro League athletes, like IFBB Pro Johnnie Jackson, IFBB Pro Ben White, IFBB Pro Stan Efferding, IFBB Pro Tom Platz, IFBB Pro Andy Haman and IFBB Pro Derik Farnsworth, have combined the two endeavors.) Whatever Huh is doing seems to have worked for him thus far. Now we'll have to see if his methods carry him through higher-level competition. Formerly known as the Night of Champions and previously won by athletes like IFBB Pro Phil Heath, IFBB Pro Roelly Winklaar and IFBB Pro Branch Warren (winner of the Arnold Sports Festival's 2011 IFBB Pro Arnold Schwarzenegger Classic Bodybuilding Championships), the New York Pro is a major qualifier for Joe Weider's Olympia Weekend and could put the newcomer, if he's successful, on the stage against 4-time Mr. Olympia IFBB Pro Jay Cutler in September.
