Get Optimum Benefits With Joint Command

Posted in: Articles by ProSource, Supplement Articles, ProSource: Joint Command, Chondroitin Sulfate, Glucosamine | Aug 12, 2010

Bodybuilders, fitness enthusiasts and other athletes primarily concentrate their efforts on maintaining a lean muscular physique. However, in order for muscles to contract and grow, they must operate in conjunction with the body's joints, like the knee or elbow joints, or even the spine, which represents a type of joint. Just as it's important to feed muscles with proper supplementation, it's equally, if not more important, to provide your joints with specific nutrients to keep them functioning optimally. Nagging pain and numerous injuries can occur to joints over time and through excessive use and can subsequently lead to osteoarthritis and spinal disk degeneration, among other concerns. Bottom line, whether you have joint pain or not, it is prudent to address the nutritional needs of these important structures.

Exercise places a lot of wear and tear on the cartilage and ligaments that make up joints and you need to ensure you nourish and protect them, whether it's preventive or therapeutic. There have been many clinical studies assessing the effects of different nutraceuticals on joint health, with several showing solid efficacy. Trying to figure out which of these compounds is most effective and purchasing each of these individually would be a daunting and expensive process. Fortunately, ProSource has done the work for you and combined the most tested and proven nutrients into one comprehensive formula, called Joint Command.

Two of the key ingredients in Joint Command are glucosamine sulfate and chondroitin sulfate. Both glucosamine and chondroitin are normal constituents and important structural components of joint cartilage. Glucosamine is one of the basic sugar components used in the synthesis of the repeating units that make up all of the glycosaminoglycans (GAG) that constitute cartilage.

In fact, glucosamine is the rate-limiting substrate for hyaluronic acid synthesis (hyaluronic acid is a main GAG secreted during tissue repair) (1). Several studies have examined the effects of glucosamine and chondroitin on osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease caused by chronic wear and tear of the joint cartilage and is commonly treated with a variety of pharmacologic therapies, including acetaminophen, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or cyclo-oxygenase-2 inhibitors. (Unfortunately, these treatments leave much to be desired and can, in fact, actually acerbate the condition.)

The theory is that glucosamine and chondroitin from supplementation gets incorporated into molecules called proteoglycans, which are part of your joint cartilage. This helps maintain the integrity of the joint as well as help repair damaged cartilage. Glucosamine is also thought to stimulate chondrocytes, cartilage-producing cells, to make new cartilage. Thus, it has the potential to reduce the signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis.

What does the research say? An impressive number of studies over the last 22 years have provided consistent findings. A recent paper published in the prestigious Archives of Internal Medicine just last year included a comprehensive analysis of randomized, placebo-controlled, clinical trials that assessed the efficacy of oral glucosamine and chondroitin on signs and symptoms associated with knee osteoarthritis (2). After evaluating almost 2,000 patients in these studies, it was concluded that supplementation with glucosamine and chondroitin had significant structural efficacy (joint space narrowing) and provided significant symptomatic relief as determined through several standard assessments for pain and functional outcomes. In fact the authors concluded that,
"...it can be definitely stated that the oral administration of glucosamine and chondroitin decreases the symptoms of osteoarthritis."
An even more recent critical review published in 2004 came to the exact same conclusion (3). Both reviews concluded tolerance of both compounds is excellent and not associated with adverse side effects.

These beneficial effects of glucosamine and chondroitin, fortunately, are not limited to the hip and knee. A recent study showed significant improvement in a case of symptomatic spinal disk degeneration (4). So it's clear that glucosamine and chondroitin are effective alone, but importantly they are even more effective when used in combination (5).

Joint Command not only combines the clinically tested amounts of both of these powerful ingredients, but it also contains several other synergistic compounds to maximize its effects on joint health. One of these is Lyprinol, a natural marine extract derived from the New Zealand Green Lipped Mussel Perna canaliculus. Lyprinol is a new, patented and stabilized natural marine lipid extract comprising a rare combination of lipid groups and unique Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, which have been shown to have potent anti-inflammatory actions in a number of human studies. Lyprinol is particularly rich in some unique types of omega 3 fatty acids but also contains a rare combination of sterol esters, triglycerides, sterols and polar lipids. The omega 3 fats appear to be the primary actives responsible for its therapeutic effects, which include the well-known health-promoting ones EPA and DHA, but also the more rare omega 3 called eicosatetraenoic acid (ETA).

This unique combination of health-promoting lipids attacks the inflammatory cascade from a different angle than the commonly used nonsteroidal drugs. Anti-inflammatory drugs mainly inhibit the cyclo-oxygenase pathway, whereas Lyprinol inhibits the 5-lipoxygenase pathway, which normally leads to generation of potent inflammation-enhancing substances. Lyprinol has greater potency and offers benefits beyond the normal plant/marine omega-3 fats (reviewed in 6). In one recent multi-center study in patients with osteoarthritis of the knee and hip, Lyprinol led to significant improvements in the signs and symptoms in 80% of the patients in as little as 4 weeks (7). The unique mode of action allows Lyprinol to work in synergy with the other components in Joint Command.

There are also several other synergistic and supportive ingredients in this remarkable formula. For example, vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is included because it is an essential cofactor for the synthesis of collagen, proteoglycans, and other components of the intracellular matrix of tissues such as bones, skin, capillary walls, and other connective tissues that make-up joints and the surrounding area. In addition to these critical functions, vitamin C has powerful antioxidant and immunomodulation effects, which make it an essential supplement for joint health. Ginger extract is an herbal medication commonly used to treat osteoarthritis.

Two well-controlled recent studies both showed clinical efficacy of ginger extract in patients with osteoarthritis (8,9). Another ingredient is methylsulfonylmethane (MSM), which has long been promoted as a pain reliever and anti-inflammatory therapy for arthritis. Recent evidence indicates that MSM works through a similar mechanism as aspirin (10). Joint Command brings these extraordinary, scientifically proven components together in one unprecedented formula.

The result is a revolutionary supplement that will protect, maintain, and enhance your joint health to help prevent injury and eliminate pain. Don't let your joints be rate-limiting in deriving benefits from your exercise training. Feed them the nutrients they need and ensure your joints will respond and adapt optimally to your workouts. Healthy joints are absolutely essential for everyone, and in particular, the serious athlete. The simple fact is, no other product on the market today offers as many critical benefits as Joint Command from ProSource.
