ANDREW OYE'S STRONGMAN REPORT: 2014 WORLD'S STRONGEST MAN CONTEST RESULTS AND WSM TV SCHEDULE

Posted in: Articles by ProSource, Andrew Oye's Pro Muscle Report, Gossip
By Andrew Oye | Apr 3, 2014

ANDREW OYE'S image The Item: Strongman Competition, Strength Sports, Contest Results, Andrew Oye's WSM Pro Athletes Roundup

The Scoop: Recently Reported: Lithuanian Pro Strongman Zydrunas Savickas overpowered his fellow competitors, winning the 2014 World's Strongest Man contest in Los Angeles, California, at locations like Muscle Beach in Venice, Paramount Studios and Universal City Walk at Universal Studios. The taped event will air on national TV later this year (when WSM organizers announce "official results").

2014 World's Strongest Man Final Results
1. Zydrunas Savickas - Lithuania (64 points)
2. Thor Bjornsson - Iceland (63.5 points)
3. Brian Shaw - USA (61 points)
4. Mike Burke - USA (40 points)
5. Terry Hollands - UK (38 points)
6. Eddie Hall - UK (33 points)
7. David Ostlund - USA (32 points)
8. Warrick Brant - Australia (29.5 points)
9. Laurence Shahlaei - UK (26.5 points)
10. Jerry Pritchett - USA (26 points)
11. Jean-Francois Caron - Canada (23.5 points)
12. Martin Wildauer - Austria (23 points)

The remaining field of qualified competitors for 2014 included: Frankie Scheun, Oyvind Rein, Tomas Rodrigues, Ben Kelsey, Robert Oberst, David Ostlund, Thor Bjornsson, Rafal Kobylarz, Mike Caruso, Lauri Nami, Dimitar Savatinov, Nick Best, Mark Felix, Eben Le Roux, Bjorn Andre Solvang, Scott Cummine, Graham Hicks, Mikhail Shivlykov, Gerhard Van Staden. Making World's Strongest Man debut: Grzegorz Szymanski.

The "So What?": Contenders competed in a series of strength tests, including the Loading Race, Vehicle Pull, Fingal's Fingers, Deadlift, Squat Lift, Viking Press, Log Press, Atlas Stones, Car Walk, Super Yoke, Keg Toss and Circus Medley.

Dominant Zydrunas Savickas adds this latest victory in 2014 -- by half of a point -- to his previous WSM wins in 2009, 2010 and 2012. This matches the four wins of retired strongmen Jon-Pall Sigmarsson and Magnus Ver Magnusson. Only a month ago, 6'3", 385-pound Savickas collected his 7th Arnold Strongman Classic win at the 2014 Arnold Sports Festival (where IFBB Pro League athletes also competed and IFBB Pro Dennis Wolf won the IFBB Pro Arnold Schwarzenegger Classic Bodybuilding Championships and qualified to face Mr. Olympia IFBB Pro Phil Heath at Joe Weider's Olympia Weekend in Las Vegas). As reported in "Andrew Oye's Pro-Muscle Report," the defending WSM champion from 2013, American Brian Shaw, reclaimed the World's Strongest Man title he had won in 2011 from Savickas. In a similar "reclamation" effort, Savickas' 2014 victory represented a reclaiming of the title he had won in 2012 back from Shaw. Unfortunately, Robert Oberst suffered an injury during the Car Walk event and Frankie Scheun was injured during the Squat event.

Andrew Oye's Verdict: The next goal for Zydrunas Savickas: matching the record of 5-time WSM Mariusz Pudzianowski (now an MMA fighter). Some "Giants Live" favorites and prominent names missing from the 2014 contenders list: Krzysztof Radzikowski, Derek Poundstone, Travis Ortmayer, Vytautas Lalas and Joshua Thigpen (as well as Mike Jenkins, who passed away in November 2013). As I previously reported in my PMR Strongman Report, the IMG-produced 2014 World's Strongest Man moved its TV taping up to the spring as opposed to the fall in order to shift its broadcast airing (formerly on ESPN) via CBS Sports Network, avoiding the National Football League (NFL), National Basketball Association (NBA) and National Hockey League (NHL) seasons. According to the CBS Sports Network website, WSM tapings will air as follows:

Saturday, April 5, 2014 | 5:00 PM - 9:30 PM
Thursday, April 10, 2014 | 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM
Friday, April 11, 2014 | 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM

D. Cooksey says:

I was wondering if WSM was aired on CBS Sports Network, and is there some way to view those airings at this time?
