ANDREW OYE'S image The Item: Strongman Competition, Strength Sports, Contest Results, Andrew Oye's WSM Pro Athletes Roundup

The Scoop: Just Announced: Over the weekend, Lithuanian Pro Strongman Zydrunas Savickas took a stronghold on his competition to win the 2012 WSM World's Strongest Man contest in Los Angeles, California. Produced by IMG, the taped event will air on national TV later this year (at which time WSM organizers broadcast the "official results" via television).
2012 World's Strongest Man Final Results
1. Zydrunas Savickas - Lithuania
2. Vytautas Lalas - Lithuania
3. Hafthor "Thor" Julius Bjornsson - Iceland
4. Brian Shaw - USA
5. Mike Jenkins - USA
6. Krzysztof Radzikowski - Poland
7. Terry Hollands - UK
8. Jean Francois Caron - Canada
9. Johannes Arsjo - Sweden
10. Ervin Katona - Serbia

The remaining field of qualified competitors included: Mateusz Baron, Nick Best, Mike Burke, James Fennelly, Chris Gearing, Ed Hall, Ole Martin Hansen, Graham Hicks, Louis-Philippe Jean, Misha Koklyaev, Sebastian Kurek, Eben Le Roux, Jack McIntosh, Alex Moonen, Akos Nagy, Lauri Nami, Derek Poundstone, Frankie Sheun, Josh Thigpen, Martin Wildauer, and reserves: Jerry Pritchett and Adam Scherr.

The "So What?": In the 35th annual edition of the World's Strongest Man Championships, contestants battled in a series of grueling powerlifting and strength-testing events, including the Super Yoke, the Giant Log Press, the Bus Pull, the Deadlift, the Rock Lift, and the Power Stairs. This victory marks the third title win for Zydrunas Savickas, who also won in 2009 and 2010 and, at 37, is oldest to win the WSM title (a few months older than Ted Van Der Parre, who won at 37 in 1992).

Also on Savickas' extensive record: 9 wins (individual and team) at IFSA International Federation of Strength Athletes contests; more than 20 wins in SCL Strongman Champions League events; 6-time Arnold Strongman Classic winner; 2-time Europe's Strongest Man Champion; and 3-time Giants Live winner. As previously reported in "Andrew Oye's Pro-Muscle Report," 2011 WSM Champion Brian Shaw suffered a bicep injury at the 2012 Arnold Strongman Classic at the Arnold Sports Festival (where "Quadrasaurus" IFBB Pro Branch Warren won the IFBB Pro Arnold Schwarzenegger Classic Bodybuilding Championships), but bounced back after surgery to place well this year.

Andrew Oye's Verdict:
Congrats to Lithuania for having two reps stand on the top finishers' podium. Krzysztof Radzikowski has more climbing to do to follow the path of fellow Polish strongman and 5-time WSM Mariusz Pudzianowski (who, per my "Games Changers" series, is now pursuing mixed martial arts MMA fighting). Many had high hopes for 3-time America's Strongest Man Champ and current MUSCLE INK Magazine cover athlete for the "Strength+Power" series Derek Poundstone; however, a post-contest message expressed his disappointment with his showing in California.

"Worlds Strongest Man is over, I didn't do as well as I planned," writes Poundstone (one of the American Strongman Corporation's most popular athletes). "I spread myself too thin due to the demands of my life and the sport. In the past, I haven't been the best husband, son, brother, uncle or friend while preparing for WSM or the Arnold. If I am to continue 100%, I need to be selfish. My friends and family have sacrificed for so long, I need to take it one level further and make it all worth it. And despite my poor performance, it seems there is always nothing but great things to read from the fans! Thanks and stay tuned...You learn more from failure than success."
