The Item: Strongman Competition, Strength Sports, Contest Results
The Scoop: Recently Announced: A week ago, Pro Strongman Mike Burke blazed the competition scene in Las Vegas to win the 2012 America's Strongest Man contest, taking the title from the defending ASM Champion Travis Ortmayer.
2012 America's Strongest Man Final Results
1. Michael Burke - WSM Qualified
2. Mike Caruso - Dallas, TX 2010
3. Robert Oberst - Dallas, TX 2012
4. Marshall White - Honolulu, Hawaii 2006
5. Carl Foemel - National Champ 2006
6. Travis Ortmayer - 2004 National Champ, 2011 ASM
7. Andrew Palmer - Dallas, TX 2009
8. Derek Devaugn - Hartford, CT 2012
9. Tomas Rodriguez - Arnold Amateur 2012
10. Chad Robison - Orlando, FL 2012
The remaining field of competitors included: Erik Peterson (National Champ 2010), Matt Dawson (San Diego, CA 2009), Brad Dunn (St. Pat's Columbia, SC 2006), David Hansen (National Champ 2008), Van Hatfield (St. Louis, MO 2004, ASM 2004), Heath Allison (St. Louis, MO 2006).
The "So What?": As reported in "Andrew Oye's Pro-Muscle Report," Lithuanian Pro Strongman Zydrunas Savickas just won the World's Strongest Man title in Los Angeles, where 3-time America's Strongest Man Champ and current MUSCLE INK Magazine cover athlete Derek Poundstone competed as well. Mike Burke also competed at the WSM and then just three days later drove straight to the American Strongman Corporation's event to take the ASM title in Vegas (part of the Olympia Weekend, where the IFBB Pro Phil Heath was crowned Mr. Olympia).
Contestants battled in a series of events, including the Farmers and Barrel Medley, the Car Deadlift, the ASC Sled Medley, the Progressive Yoke, the Atlas Stone Lift, the Giant Dumbbell Press Medley (Burke set a new world record with a 265-pound dumbbell), and the Max Log Press (rookie ASC Pro Robert Oberst set a new record with a 445-pound lift).
Andrew Oye's Verdict: Not only is ASM Mike Burke to be commended for competing in grueling back-to-back battles of strength - failing to make the finals in the first contest and then winning the second contest - Burke has built a strong overall record, finishing in the Top 5 of all but one of his competitions (thus far 8 0f 9), including the 2012 Arnold Schwarzenegger Strongman Classic.
