ANDREW OYE'S IFBB PRO ATHLETES ROUNDUP: 'QUADFATHER' IFBB PRO TOM PLATZ, ARNOLD CLASSIC CHAMP BRANCH WARREN, IFBB PRO DENNIS WOLF, IFBB PRO SHAWN RHODEN, IFBB PRO EVAN CENTOPANI, IFBB PRO SETH FEROCE

The Scoop: Recently Reported: IFBB Pro League athletes had career updates or made recent guest appearances at various sports bodybuilding, physique and fitness events. The latest "Andrew Oye's Pro-Muscle Report" Pro Athletes Roundup includes veteran pros and rookie pros chasing Olympia gold and retired pros from the "Golden Era."

The "So What?": Two-time IFBB Pro Arnold Schwarzenegger Classic Bodybuilding Championships winner IFBB Pro Branch Warren (a.k.a. "Quadrasaurus") announced he will not defend the title at the 2013 Arnold Sports Festival. With reports of IFBB Pro Shawn Rhoden, IFBB Pro Dennis Wolf and IFBB Pro Evan Centopani also skipping the event in Columbus, Ohio, odds are favoring newly crowned 2012 Masters Olympia Champion IFBB Pro Dexter Jackson (a 3-time Arnold Classic champion) and IFBB Pro Cedric McMillan at next year's Arnold Classic, which is an IFBB Pro Olympia Qualification Series contest.

IFBB Pro Seth Feroce (who turned pro at the 2009 National Physique Committee National Bodybuilding Championships) and rookie IFBB Pro Brian Yersky (who recently earned his IFBB Pro card at the NPC National Bodybuilding Championships) competed at a strength (powerlifting) challenge in New Jersey. Speaking of strength, golden-era bodybuilder IFBB Pro Tom Platz (a.k.a. the "Golden Eagle" and "Quadfather") recently explained the role of powerlifing in making him one of the original "Quadzillas." Platz sought advice from a physique magazine editor as an 11-year-old with hopes of someday becoming a professional bodybuilder, and he was told his legs needed work.

"I started squatting. All the Olympic lifters in Detroit showed me how to squat. That's why I did high-bar squats and went below parallel..." recalls Platz, AAU State Powerlifting Championships (220 Class) winner in 1974 and the 3rd place runner-up to Mr. Olympia IFBB Pro Franco Columbu at Joe Weider's Olympia Weekend in 1981. "It wasn't that I overcompensated. I think I was genetically gifted for the movement. Good quality squatting yields great results."

Andrew Oye's Verdict: The result? For Tom Platz, some of the most impressive wheels (legs) in bodybuilding, even by today's standards. Over the years, Platz's quadriceps (thigh muscles), hamstrings and calves have been praised as inspirational by several IFBB Pro League athletes, competitive bodybuilders and heavy-lifting gym-goers. During his competitive days in the International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness, the 1975 Mr. Michigan winner racked up 2nd place finishes at the 1980 Pro Universe Championships and 1980 World Pro Championships (both won by IFBB Pro Jusup Wilkosz), and he competed in the Mr. Olympia Championships seven times. In the early 1990s, Platz also had a brief stint as Talent Director for WWE CEO Vince McMahon's WBF World Bodybuilding Federation (whose roster WBF BodyStars included IFBB Pro Gary Strydom, IFBB Pro Berry DeMey, IFBB Pro Eddie Robinson  IFBB Pro Danny Padilla, IFBB Pro Tony Pearson, IFBB Pro Jim Quinn, and IFBB Pro Troy Zuccolotto).
