ANDREW OYE'S image The Item: Career Updates, Special Appearances, Andrew Oye's IFBB Pro Athletes Roundup

The Scoop: Recently Reported: IFBB Pro League athletes and other pro athletes had career updates or made recent guest appearances at various sports, bodybuilding, physique and fitness events. The latest "Andrew Oye's Pro-Muscle Report" Pro Athletes Roundup includes Mr. Olympias past and present; a past gladiator and present-day actor; and a strongman/wrestler of the recent past who is presently a competitive bodybuilder.

The "So What?": Over the weekend (with the IFBB Pro Olympia Qualification Series in high gear), reigning 3-time Mr. Olympia and winner of the Arnold Sports Festival's 2013 IFBB Pro Arnold Schwarzenegger Classic Bodybuilding Championships in Europe, IFBB Pro Phil Heath was the headlining guest-poser at the Omaha Pro/NPC Duel of Champions Nebraska State Bodybuilding Championships, which was emceed by retired IFBB Pro Bob Cicherillo. Afterward, Heath said, "I just finished my last appearance before my Olympia prep begins in two weeks and I must say, the people of Omaha, Nebraska, were amazing. Thank you."

Several pros made appearances at a sports-nutrition Epic Block Party outdoor meet-and-greet event in New York, including legendary 8-time Mr. Olympia IFBB Pro Ronnie Coleman, as well as 4-time Mr. Olympia IFBB Pro Jay Cutler and IFBB Pro Jose Raymond. Guest performers at the NPC Idaho Muscle Classic Bodybuilding Championships included actor and fitness personality Mike O'Hearn (a.k.a., 'Titan' from TV's "American Gladiators"). Also getting amped for Joe Weider's Olympia Weekend, after some sightseeing in Alaska, 2-time Arnold Classic Champ IFBB Pro Branch Warren said, "The last week of rest was great, but now it's time to go back to work and begin focusing on the Mr. Olympia [contest]." Warren also announced this week's series of upcoming nutrition-store appearance dates in Massachusetts: Everette (June 9), Plymouth and Easton (June 10), concluding with a stop in Shelton, Connecticut (June 11).

Andrew Oye's Verdict: A deep-thinking athlete recently caught my attention, declaring, "Squatting for me is a spiritual experience. Squatting isn't just an exercise. It is a place where I can lose myself and find myself all in one set." These are the words of Jon Andersen who happens to be a graduate of the University of Portland (theology major, philosophy minor). The retired IFSA pro strongman and pro wrestler guest-posed at the NPC/IFBB Northern California Bodybuilding Championships over the weekend. In 2003, Andersen won the North America's Strongest Man contest, and he placed 2nd at the 2006 ASM America's Strongest Man contest. Andersen was the Masters 40+, Open Heavyweight and Overall winner at the 2014 NPC Governors Cup in Sacramento, CA, which was his first bodybuilding contest under the tutelage of contest-prep coach and retired IFBB Pro Achim Albrecht. Himself a strength coach, who trains clients using powerlifting and strongman techniques, Andersen potentially has sights set on the NPC Masters National Bodybuilding Championships in July.

In a recent interview, the 42-year-old says of his "Deep Water" adaptation-training philosophy and doing what's difficult, "I had this burning in my gut to be this big, strong guy. I didn't have a mentor, a coach...so I started attacking this burning in my belly to try and achieve my goals...I just went with what I thought was right.  Little did I know that I was doing stuff that was really 'off the beaten path' -- not only with my training, but with my dieting.  [The usual] '3 sets of 10' is boring...Where's the feeling of staring adversity in the face and not quite knowing of you're gonna make it? That's what it's all about."
