Here's why. Studies have shown that adding protein to your diet while cutting calories may help maintain muscle mass while also promoting some fat loss 2, 3, 4. Few studies, however, have added protein in the form of a dietary protein supplement while following a restricted calorie diet to determine fat loss and maintenance of muscle mass.
In an Australian study, 70 obese/overweight men and women (48.4(+or-)1.8 years) supplemented their diet with whey protein, casein protein or glucose to determine changes in body composition and health markers in the blood. No exercise program was followed and no other changes in the diet were made during the 12-week study. While no changes in body composition were noted between the three groups, significant improvements in triglycerides, total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol were found along with reductions in fasting insulin and insulin resistance scores in those individuals who supplemented with whey protein (Pal etal., unpublished observations).
Similarly, a 12-week study by Frestedt and colleagues1 had participants follow an American Heart Association diet (55% carbohydrate, 15% protein, 30% fat) that was reduced in calories by 500 calories each day. Twice daily, one group ingested a dietary supplement containing the specialized formulation, Prolibra, which contained high levels of leucine, bioactive peptides and milk calcium. The other, control group ingested an isocaloric placebo. At the conclusion, the subjects taking Prolibra retained twice as much lean muscle with 79% fat-loss compared to the control group at 51%. It's important to highlight that even though no exercise program was followed and similar amounts of weight were lost from both groups, the Prolibra group lost significantly more fat (~8 lbs vs. 4.5 lbs), while also losing less muscle than the control group1. These results were exciting because the ability to sustain muscle mass while dieting without exercising had yet to be demonstrated
to that degree.
Leucine Plays a Critical Role
When looking at the specialized ingredients contained within Vectron and Prolibra, a few deserve a little more discussion. To start, dietary calcium has been suggested to help burn fat and stimulate changes in body composition5, 6. Another compelling prospect is the essential amino acid, leucine, which means we have to get it from our diet. The essential amino acids are known to be critically important for protein synthesis or muscle growth7, may help to prevent muscle breakdown8 and are known to be a valuable source of fuel for muscle9. Only a few studies have investigated the role of leucine during dieting conditions and what they've found is promising.
In a 12-week study, 38 overweight police officers aged 34(+or-) 4 years were placed into one of three groups10. All groups followed a reduced calorie diet that provided 80% of daily caloric needs and a four-day-per-week resistance exercise program. Two groups supplemented their diets on a daily basis with either casein or whey protein. Each day two doses (37 grams each) of either casein or whey protein were provided, resulting in a daily protein intake of around 1.5 grams of protein per kilogram of body mass per day (120 grams of protein for a 180 pound male). Casein and whey protein are forms of milk protein that are considered to be of a high quality and each contain a relatively high amount of the essential amino acids,
including leucine. Both groups experienced significantly greater reductions in fat mass (-12.3 pounds vs. -5.5 pounds) than the control group and greater increases in lean mass (9 pounds vs. 4.5 pounds).
