Mint has been used in traditional medicine for centuries as an anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic (muscle relaxant), and antioxidant. However a most recent study illustrates that drinking 500ml of mineral water infused with 0.05ml of peppermint essential oil every day can increase exercise performance. Subjects who drank this minty concoction for 10 days prior to treadmill exercise testing saw a 25% increase in time to exhaustion, over 50% increase in work completed, and over 20% increase in power. Although the mechanisms behind these benefits are unknown, the authors postulated that peppermint oil might relax airway bronchioles and increase ventilation to decrease lactate levels and increase brain oxygenation.
Unfortunately this study was not placebo controlled, which limits enthusiasm for their findings. Nonetheless, it's worth trying, if not for anything else you will have fresh breath while you train!
