The Item: IFBB Pro League Legends Update, Tribute to a Champion, Andrew Oye's IFBB Pro Athletes Roundup

The Scoop: Just Reported: Actor and legendary Mr. Olympia Sergio Oliva passed away. (July 4, 1941 - November 12, 2012)

The "So What?": Born in Cuba, Sergio Oliva was chosen to represent his country at the 1962 Central American Games and took 2nd place at the 1962 National Weightlifting Championships. Political asylum brought Oliva to the United States. He won the 1963 Mr. Chicago Bodybuilding Championships, his first bodybuilding competition. Nicknamed "The Myth" for his "unbelievable" physique, IFBB Pro Sergio Oliva became renowned for his near-perfect execution of the arms-over-head "Victory" pose, and he went on to win many titles, including three consecutive Mr. Olympia titles. (He was the only bodybuilder to ever defeat 7-time Mr. Olympia IFBB Pro Arnold Schwarzenegger in an Olympia contest). Oliva acted in a few movies, and he was a retired 25-year-veteran Chicago police officer.

Andrew Oye's Verdict: Steered by its newly implemented IFBB Pro Olympia Qualification Series, the International Federation of Bodybuilding & Fitness recently crowned a young repeat champion (2-time Mr. Olympia IFBB Pro Phil Heath) and awarded another Sandow trophy at Joe Weider's Olympia Weekend. Back in the golden era, it was long-reigning winners like Sergio Oliva who fueled the excitement of witnessing a dominant titleholder stake claim to his throne. Last year, "Andrew Oye's Pro-Muscle Report" reported the passing of Oliva's peer, IFBB Pro Serge Nubret -- a contender at the 1975 Olympia (backdrop for the famed documentary film "Pumping Iron," which also featured TV's "Incredible Hulk" IFBB Pro Lou Ferrigno and Schwarzenegger, founder of the Arnold Sports Festival and the Arnold Classic Bodybuilding Championships).

While IFBB Pro League legends leave the world, their legacies live on. In Oliva's case, it is partly through his son, Sergio Oliva, Jr., who is also a competitive bodybuilder. The senior Oliva was the successor to 2-time Mr. Olympia IFBB Pro Larry Scott (the title's first-ever winner in 1965 and the 2011 IFBB Pro World Masters' Lifetime Achievement Award recipient) who, upon learning of his colleague's passing, posted his condolences: "I will always have a special place deep in my heart for the friendship and stories that Sergio and I shared over the many years...R.I.P. my dear friend."
