Career Updates, Legends Update, Andrew Oye's IFBB Pro Athletes Roundup
Recently Reported: The latest "Andrew Oye's Pro-Muscle Report" Pro Athletes Roundup corrals a crew of IFBB Pro League athletes via video. Last week, legendary 6-time Mr. Olympia IFBB Pro Dorian Yates posted a video, in which he takes viewers on a tour showing off renovations to his Temple Gym in Birmingham, England -- renowned as a bastion of hardcore training. Stopping at the rusty, red entrance door to the dungeon-like facility, Yates insists matter-of-factly, "You don't enter this gym, unless you're here to train. Nothing else down here -- just weights, machines. No saunas. Nothing fancy."
The changes include shifting the main floor of equipment from one side to the other. A full wall displays plaques and awards from his many wins in Olympia and Grand Prix contests, while another wall shows artwork by young fans. Throughout the space, walls are plastered with collages of Yates' nearly 50 magazine covers and thousands of bodybuilding photos. A female artist spray-painted a mural of a flexing Dorian, and a new leg-training room was added onto the main weight-training area.
The "So What?":
Ironically, just a few months ago, an older video clip resurfaced of "A Hall of Fame Visit" to Yates' Temple Gym, featuring a gathering of IFBB Hall of Fame athletes IFBB Pro Flex Wheeler, IFBB Pro Kevin Levrone and IFBB Pro Shawn Ray (up-and-coming U.K. IFBB Pro Zach Khan was also spotted) at the place where Yates trained during the 90's -- while also trekking to Joe Weider's Olympia Weekend to collect his multiple Sandow trophies. (Yates captured one shy of IFBB Pro Arnold Schwarzenegger's seven crowns and two less than the record of eight won by both IFBB Pro Lee Haney and IFBB Pro Ronnie Coleman. All of this was pre-IFBB Pro Olympia Qualification Series Point System.)
Andrew Oye's Verdict:
The back-to-back postings of the old and new videos formed a cool, unintentional time-travel experience that speaks to the history of the gym, where, over the years, Dorian Yates has led many pro bodybuilders like IFBB Pro Evan Centopani and retired IFBB Pro Chris Cormier through intense workouts. In the newest clip, about the no-frills atmosphere, Yates declares, "This is a real gym. Apparently, you've got gyms nowadays where bodybuilders are not welcome, which [upsets me], because there would be no gym industry, if it wasn't for gyms like this...and bodybuilding. So you're welcome to come down here, train hard, shout, spit on the floor. I don't care. This is a real bodybuilding gym."
