The Scoop: Just Announced: Over the weekend, the 2014 NPC Masters National Bodybuilding Championships granted a fresh collection of athletes with qualifications for IFBB Pro League cards in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Jon Andersen won the Super-Heavyweight Class and the Overall 35+ titles. Also earning qualification for professional status were class/age-group winners Mark Erpelding (Masters Heavyweight 35+), Charles Lyons (Masters Light-Heavyweight 35+), Milton Martinez (Masters Light-Heavyweight 40+), Ko Chandetka (Masters Middleweight 40+, Overall 40+), and Skip Robinson (Masters Light-Heavyweight 50+, Overall 50+).
The "So What?": As previously reported in "Andrew Oye's Pro-Muscle Report," new IFBB Pro Jon Andersen is a theology and philosophy graduate, retired IFSA pro strongman and a pro wrestler. Following his own "Deep Water" methods and coached by retired IFBB Pro Achim Albrecht, Andersen won the Masters Open Heavyweight Class and Overall title at the 2014 NPC Governors Cup in Sacramento, California. He was the 2003 North America's Strongest Man champion and the 2006 ASM America's Strongest Man contest runner-up.
New IFBB Pro Ko Chandetka, whose childhood influences were superhero characters like Captain America (as he stated when interviewed on the ESPN "American Muscle Magazine" TV show in the mid-90s), has had many 2nd place runner-up finishes, including: 1993 NPC Junior Nationals (Bantamweight), 1994 NPC Junior USA (Lightweight), 2000 NPC California Championships (Middleweight), 2003 NPC Junior Nationals (Middleweight), and 2012 NPC Masters Nationals (Welterweight). He string of 1st place finishes: 2000 NPC Orange County Classic (Light-Heavyweight), 2011 IFBB North American Championships (Welterweight), and 2013 NPC Masters Nationals (Middleweight, 40+).
Andrew Oye's Verdict: Regular readers know I often give extra props to multi-sport athletes. True, some (or most?) mature rookie pros are unlikely to accrue enough momentum on the IFBB Pro Olympia Qualification Series Point System to make it to Joe Weider's Olympia Weekend (a.k.a. the "Super Bowl of bodybuilding") to contend with the likes of Mr. Olumpia IFBB Pro Phil Heath, IFBB Pro Branch Warren IFBB Pro Dennis Wolf and IFBB Pro Mamdouh Elssbiay (a.k.a. "Big Ramy,"). Also, there is no designated Masters Division at the Arnold Sports Festival's IFBB Pro Arnold Schwarzenegger Classic Bodybuilding Championships.
Yet, I recently reported that the IFBB Masters Pro Championships was added to the 2014 IFBB contest schedule and will be held with the IFBB North American Championships in August. This new event might not only draw other recent Masters pro-card winners like IFBB Pro Mike Yablon, IFBB Pro Joe Derousie, IFBB Pro Michael Ely, IFBB Pro Tim McGuire, IFBB Pro Beau Baisden, IFBB Pro Mark Byers (former NFL Detroit Lions football player) and IFBB Pro Malcolm Marshall (former NFL Philadelphia Eagles and New York Jets football player). While unlikely, it could also catch interest from veteran IFBB Pro League athletes like IFBB Pro Dexter Jackson (a Masters Olympia winner and Masters contest dominator), IFBB Pro Ed Nunn, IFBB Pro Ronny Rockel, IFBB Pro Michael Kefalianos, IFBB Pro Toney Freeman, IFBB Pro Darrem Charles, IFBB Pro Andy Haman, and powerlifting IFBB Pro Stan Efferding.
