The Scoop: Recently Reported: IFBB Pro League athletes had career updates or made recent guest appearances at various sports, bodybuilding, physique and fitness events. The latest "Andrew Oye's Pro-Muscle Report" Pro Athletes Roundup includes pros packing their bags and uplifting their fans.
The "So What?": The year kicks off with 4-time Mr. Olympia IFBB Pro Jay Cutler announcing that he will not compete during the 2014 IFBB Pro League contest season, electing to focus on his businesses and contest-promotion efforts and leaving 3-time Mr. Olympia IFBB Pro Phil Heath to fight off the other pros hungry for a Sandow trophy.
Other IFBB Pro bodybuilders have elected to walk away from the competitive stage altogether, announcing their retirements. IFBB Pro Troy Alves wrote, in part, "After over 20 years in the bodybuilding industry, I would like to start off 2014 by officially announcing my retirement from the stage and competing. While my body has responded well at my youthful age of 47, there is nothing left to prove and nothing gained to continue competing...I am beyond happy with all that I accomplished with my physique...while always staying true to what my body was all about, symmetry...While I am retiring from competition, I will never leave the sport entirely and will be involved in different ways."
IFBB Pro Marcus Haley posted a poetic good-bye message that read, in part, "I can't help but reflect back on the year I had and what it means for the coming year. I have loved and lost. I have tasted victory and been crippled by defeat. The sport of bodybuilding has given me so much but at such a great cost. I think of the opportunities I have missed as I stood by watching life's traveling circus...Then I smile when I think of all the people I have met and made smile on the way...For that was the life in which I had chose, forever my legacy standing in time froze. I stand here a half broken man ready for a new start...I will always love the sport of bodybuilding."
A few weeks ago, while in the holiday spirit, 212 Division IFBB Pro Guy Cisternino paid a visit to a hospitalized fan he had met previously at a demo appearance to lift the patient's spirits. Reportedly, doctors had difficulty diagnosing the fan's mystery illness causing him to lose a considerable amount of weight.
Andrew Oye's Verdict: As 2014 starts to roll, some IFBB Pro League athletes are prepping for the first IFBB Pro Olympia Qualification Series contest- the IFBB Pro Arnold Schwarzenegger Classic Championships. Meanwhile, others have stepped on stage for the last time. Veteran Troy Alves, a long-time Open Division competitor (who earned his IFBB Pro card at the 2002 NPC USA Bodybuilding Championships), last competed at the 2013 Joe Weider's Olympia Weekend 212 Showdown (won by IFBB Pro Flex Lewis) and finished in 8th place, behind Cisternino. Marcus Haley (who earned his pro card at the 2005 IFBB North American Bodybuilding Championships and went on to win the "Best Poser" Award at the 2007 Arnold Classic) last competed at the 2013 Toronto Pro Bodybuilding Championships (won by IFBB Pro Victor Martinez) and finished in 10th place. Farewell, fellas.
