Well, the fun part is over. If you followed the guidelines provided in our winter Bulking Up feature, you're looking at a different guy in the mirror today. You’ve been lifting and eating and eating and lifting all winter and into the spring, growing bigger and bulkier day after day. Are you big? Yes you are! Do you want to take your shirt off? No, not really.

Now comes the tricky part. The moment where you turn all of those squats and calories into a ripped, shredded and rock hard work of art. You’re at the moment of truth . . . and there are so many ways to go wrong.

Are you about to enter into a lockdown period of strict caloric deficit? That’s a good way to lose weight, if by “weight” you mean “muscle mass.” Starving the beast will cause your body to radically downshift metabolism to compensate, diminishing fat mobilization and sacrificing metabolically expensive muscle tissue for fuel. Lean muscle mass is an active tissue that requires energy to maintain, so it’s always the first to go when the body encounters famine.

And then, too, you’re going to experience a massive energy crash that will undermine your workouts and trap-door you into a general lethargy and listlessness. Not exactly the look you were hoping to rock on the beach this summer. Cutting way back on caloric intake also generates cortisol-producing mental stress, which is closely linked to fat gain, not fat loss. And let’s face it, even if there were any positive outcomes to be had by living on starvation rations, you wouldn’t be able to sustain that lifestyle for very long anyway. That’s a common yo-yo dynamic that has kept Weight Watchers in business for more than fifty years.

So, what to do? (NO, not more cardio! The answer is NEVER more muscle-wasting cardio!) The key is to eat just about as much protein as before. Why? Because research tells us that increased protein intake can promote weight loss with a greater percentage of the lost weight coming from body fat. The consumption of protein has a thermogenic effect because it takes more energy (and burns more calories) to digest protein as compared to fats and carbs. Add this to the fact that dietary protein supports muscle repair, recovery, and growth, and it is readily apparent that cutting back on protein intake is not the solution. Certain proteins are more beneficial to your cutting phase than others, however, and we’ll be getting to that subject in a bit.

How about carbs? Here’s a place where you will have to cut back a bit, but you must remain cognizant that carbs (and healthy fats too) are a crucial energy source that will support both your workouts and the many bodily processes that make fat mobilization and muscle mass maintenance possible. So you’ll have to compensate for that energy deficit somewhere else. An energy catalyst that also targets excess fat would fit the bill nicely.
