When you're known as "Bubba The Love SpongeTM," most people would guess you have a weight problem. And in this case, it's true. But for the highly rated Sirius radio personality, thanks to exercise, diet and ProSource supplements, it's a battle he's finally winning.

Bubba -- whose popular show began airing on Sirius Satellite Radio's "Howard 101" in January -- has shed over 70 pounds since he started his fitness regimen. "Granted, I am a fat ass, but I am down to 258 from 330 a year ago," he says.

Armed with nothing but a will to improve, a training program, low-carb diet and a host of supplements that included BioQuest's Tetrazene ES-50, Bubba has made an amazing transformation already, and aims to continue his progress. "All three aspects of getting in shape are important," he stresses. "You can't have success unless you are strict on all three. I have been doing this seriously for about three years now, and it's all about consistency. It's not easy to do, and many times I don't feel like working out, but on those days, I at least get my 30 minutes of cardio in; this helps counterbalance any bad eating you may have done during the day."

The hilariously raunchy on-air talent first broke into radio back in 1984, and has worked in many markets since. Garnering industry awards and an army of faithful listeners through the years, his show went into syndication in 2001, and was growing into a national force when the Federal Communications Commission -- still on its witch-hunt after the Janet Jackson incident at the 2004 Super Bowl -- slapped a record fine on Bubba's employer, Clear Channel Communications, for an on-air skit he did.

Clear Channel tucked tail and dropped Bubba rather than fight for free speech, but terrestrial radio's loss was satellite's gain, as fellow FCC target Howard Stern picked him up for Sirius. Now, Bubba can push his antics to the edge and beyond, without the repercussions of domineering, humorless government suits reviewing every entertaining word.

Just as he's worked tirelessly to build his name and reputation as a top talent in the radio game, Bubba has busted ass in the gym. He's extremely dedicated to his program, and posted it on his website, www.btls.com, when fans kept asking just what the heck he was doing to lose weight.

"I work out first thing in the morning," he says. "I have my supplements [all from ProSource.net] laid out from the night before, as soon as my feet touch the ground I go right to [them]." One of those supps is BioQuest's Tetrazene ES-50 -- two capsules jack up his energy levels, kills his appetite so he doesn't go off the wagon and over eat, and has ultimately been an incredible weapon in his fight to get leaner and stronger. In addition to the other supplements he takes, one of his favorites is the Supreme Protein bar. "It tastes like a candy bar but it's packed full of real protein" he says.

In the morning, he hits the gym with wrestling superstar Hulk Hogan for a weight and cardio workout. "On days I don't lift weights, I always do my cardio," he explains. "Let me give you this little info that Hogan and I figured out about a year ago. On days that we did cardio before our workouts, I would get my heart rate up to about 120 [beats per minute], which I thought was good, but it was the first thing of the day I was doing, and my heart had just rested for about seven hours when I was sleeping. When Hogan and I started doing our cardio after our workouts, although it was a little harder, I would do the same distance and time, and my heart rate would get to about 134 bpm. We think [doing] about 45 minutes to an hour of weights before warms up our [cardiovascular system], which in turn [helps] us get more out of our cardio."

For the most part, Bubba and Hulk use a lot of Flex and Icarian machines. "We use dumbbells, but mostly machines, and we do lower weight and high reps," Bubba says. "This tends to lean you out and define you more than make you bulky. We always do at least 12 reps, and try to get 18-20 if we can."

Who would have guessed at first glance -- or first hearing of his name -- that Bubba was such a workoutaholic? It just goes to prove, that not everything is as you might initially think. Bubba's nickname, for instance. A fat reference? Definitely not. In fact, friend and fellow broadcaster Cary Gray branded him with the moniker at his first job in Terra Haute, Indiana. It seems Bubba was at a party with Gray, and having plenty of luck with the women. The next day, "Scary Cary" went on the air and said Bubba was soaking up love the night before like a sponge. Bubba hated it, but it stuck. As he admits, "Finally I trademarked it -- and it's been my semi-claim to fame."

Being called a Sponge may have taken some getting used to, and so has his fitness program -- but both have paid him major dividends, and he wouldn't dream of giving either up now. "It has been a long, long journey," he says. "I think that watching what I eat, exercise and proper nutrition will be a lifelong battle for me. As soon as I get off my daily regimen just for a few days, I seem to gain two or three pounds. Of course the key to all of this is exercise. I can actually go out and cheat on my diet a little, as long as I hit the gym that night or next morning, and don't forget to get right back on my supplements as well."

Bubba The Love SpongeTM can be heard on Sirius Satellite Radio Howard 101, 3-7 p.m. Eastern/12 noon-4 p.m. Pacific time.
